Anything that close to the tire is going to take a beating. Why not get it painted and then wrap it with clear vinyl film? I found some on www.summitracing.com
and use a strip where my rear wiper rests to keep it from scuffing the paint. People use it as a "clear bra" along the front of the hood, or for rocker protection. Here's the Summit part number: SLC-T9020
