Re: Gonna get my baby booked in...

Just hoping its not too far over the original quote (100-200 is okay, more would be a PITA as I need the wheels powder coated too).

I'll post back more tomorrow after I've met the guys at the shop!

Re: Gonna get my baby booked in...

Awesome idea Marty. Never saw a WJ in flat black. Seems like a good price too but I would strongly encourage you to get involved in the choice / selection of the vinyl. This will makes all the difference of the world.

First of all make sure they are using cast vinyl and not calendered vinyl. The latter is made from a large piece on PVC which is passed between several rolls, compressed and stretched until it’s the right size. Its also know as “value” or “economical” and is used typically for flat surfaces and smaller duration jobs (but can be rated up to five years). Cast on the other hand is applied in a liquid form and baked which makes it thinner, with far, far less memory form effect and has more resistance to outdoor exposure. Cast will not lift or shrink as easily as calendared and will last longer and be easier to remove.

But that’s not it. Wrap vinyl was never made to be used in a single color with the noticeable exceptions of Oracal 970 RA and Hexis 2000. They are made to be printed on and require that the installer puts a (vinyl) overlaminate for protection or any drop of oil, fuel or a bird shit would be permanent. In fact, most black matte wraps are gloss black vinyl with a matte overlam. This is relevant is that in the case of a matte finish the combination on vinyl and overlam will determine your “color” or “finish”.
Not all matte overlam are the same level of matt-ness and its really worth trying a couple combinations if you have the opportunity. Some will look identical under certain lightening conditions and radically different under others so make sure you bring them outside and walk around to gauge the light reflection. The 3m 8520 overlam is kind of matte, Avery DOL 1100 is more matte and Oracal’s 290 M even more matte.

Anyway, see if you can check it out with them. If possible try some black matte vinyl, ideally a 3m 180 series (180c-22 is the color code) with a 3m 8520 overlam. Its gorgeous.

See this wrap ... not a fan but it illustrates the overlam point

same shop, same guys, same vinyl, same car, different overlam ... semi gloss instead of gloss ... totally different effect.

These guys are using an Avery EZ 9 black with DOL 1100 (or 1080) overlam. See how they remove the headlights to ensure a perfect install ... might want to clarify with your guys the extent of removing they will be doing.

and a perfect job this ends of being. Look at the finish, hard to believe that its wrapped and not painted.

This guy also used an Avery EZ black but with a DOL 5000 matte overlam. If memory serves me well he said he regretted to have used Avery instead of 3m and had to redo the grill a couple times before switching that part to 3m.

I think its real nice

This is an extreme matte finish ... not even sure its vinyl but it works on a Aston. Not sure for a jeep

I am told that this is an Oracal 970. Not sure but it looks more or less right, its more of a semi gloss than a black matte that it is advertised to be. I prefer that finish for WK jeeps, not sure for a WJ.

Damn that looks good. Around me it's from $2500. And up for vinyl wrap.

Re: Gonna get my baby booked in...

Okay first off I want to say a thank you for the invaluable info, rvtifer! +rep

Next, I better say that the Jeep will not be getting wrapped in matte black...

It turns out the matte black vinyl they use is a single sheet with no top coat. So, when you catch it with your nail it leaves scratches - I was told they would wash out tho. Didn't scream durability to me...

So, change of plan!

The owner of the company just finished wrapping his own car in a new product they don't list yet and as soon as I saw it the matte black idea was kinda fading away!

It was done using a metallic grey base layer with a clear matte overlam on top. You can run your nail over it and it doesn't mark it also highly resistant to oils, bird droppings, stone chips, scratches etc...

I was also really wound up about getting the door jambs done and in reality there would be parts left that would stick out like a sore thumb.

His car was red and he has left the door jambs alone, mainly because there would be parts that they just can't do and these would stick out anyway. However, there were parts that you can see even with the doors closed if you look close - which would annoy me with the matte black. So I decided on just leaving the jambs alone for two reasons:
1. There would be areas missed anyway and the wrap is close enough to the original color.
2. I could always get them done later anyway if it bugged me that much.

With regards to removing parts from the car; they remove the door handles, mirrors, headlights, tail lights, roof rails, window trim and other trim (grille etc) as standard...

So that's about it.. It will be going in next Saturday and should be ready to collect on Wednesday 16th. Wooohooo!!

Oh, I'm also thinking about getting them to use the matte black vinyl between the side windows to make it look like one big window. Whatcha think?

And sorry for the huge post!

Here's a photo taken on my iPhone of his car - it is wet hence the glossy hood.

Re: Gonna get my baby booked in...

Yeah that looks like a sweet, sweet finish and I am looking forward to seeing your pictures posted. For whatever its worth I think it will be better than the black matte. As for the pillars in black, sure but its an easy job so wait until its done and add a cheap vinyl on top so see if you like. If not just take it out.

Good luck and I am really looking forward to seeing this one done.

Re: Gonna get my baby booked in...

Ah good point on the pillars, I'll get them to layer the matte black on top of the grey! I'm so glad your on this site, I'd never have thought of that!

Oh, still up in the air over wheel color too - matte black, gloss black or anthracite?

Any input from you guys would be appreciated, to help make up my mind - the Audi in the pic has matte black wheels...

Re: Gonna get my baby booked in...

If you're going a metallic gray, that turns into a matt-ish gray, then anthracite would be my pick.

I'm excited for ya Marty! Its gonna look great!

Paint is permanent, and probably more expensive. Just tossing out reasons, that's not particularly Marty's point of view.
