HIR is just a halogen bulb...HID is a whole different animal (HID = High Intensity Discharge, HIR = Halogen Infrared Reflecting). I am not too familiar with HIR, but it is basically a bulb with an infrared reflecting coating that increases its temperature. At the end of the day it is still a halogen bulb with a filament. HID bulbs do not use a filament; they utilize an electric arc between electrodes in an enclosed housing filled with gas and salts. These two differences totally change the optics of each bulb which is why they are not interchangeable in reflectors or projectors which are optimized for either halogen or HID bulbs.
