Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

No idea where to start, so here it goes. Just picked up 2013 Overland summit (black/saddle), I want to black it out.
Looking at
1) 20X10 oem matte black srt rims from twincity, will they fit on my vehicle or do i have to go with 20X9? Are rims from twincity decent or junk? (seem like a really good price. Almost too good vs Jeep prices.)

2)will aftermarket basic black out grill for 2013 fit overland sumitt? I heard summit has special grill that makes it different from limited because of electronics.

3will aftermarket overland or srt black headlights surrounds fit 2013 overland summit or are there issues

4)Do i have to buy complete side mirrors to eliminate chrome or are there black pieces to wrap around chrome i can purchase much cheaper?

5)what is best way to deal with chrome door handles? Replacement labor is intense, thinking of just just spray lates or similar appication to handle this and chrome trim around windows.

6)What do i do about chrome trim around side windows? Is there a cheaper aftermarket compatible part other than what Jeep offers?

PS Im willing to sell any of my factory chrome exterior parts and rims/tires if anyone is interested. I have 20X8 1/2 factory polished rims and tires (200 miles)

Any advise is appreciated
BLX

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

First off, welcome to the Forum!

I've went through some of this as well on my 2011 Limited and will be doing it again on my new-to-me Overland.

I'll try to provide some brief insight as I understand it on some of these questions:

1) No comment. never researched.

2) Not aware of the Summit having different electronics in the grille and/or insert. The difference I am aware of is the Chrome honeycomb insert instead of the black honeycomb on the Overland and the black vertical slats on the Limited/Laredo. If your interested, we could swap inserts - I have the Black Honeycomb. The exterior on all of them is chrome. You can have this painted or, since your Jeep is black, you can buy the Jeep Altitude Brilliant black grille from Just for Jeeps. I'll likely do this. If I am wrong an there was a change to the 2013 grille/insert someone please correct me.

3) Shouldn't have any problems here.

4) You can buy the painted Laredo style caps from MOPAR. If I recall they were $80/set. I found the installation instructions two years ago but never went through with it. I'll be looking into it again.

5) Looked into this too. The labor to remove the door was cost prohibitive (for me). If you can find someone nearby with a black Laredo who wants chrome handles you could split the appointment at a shop. Never looked into anything else.

6) A lot of people have plasti-dipped. I'd be interested to know of another solution as well.

Hope this helps,

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

thanks m hassler,
i appreciate the feedback. Nice Jeep. Where did you get the black fog light surrounds? Dealer? I havnt found those on line.
Do you know of anyone who makes fender flares for the grand cherokee. Looking at them it would seem a fairly simple part to apply. I would like them to match paint. Im getting 20X10s put on next week im just worried they may stick out to far.
I also cant seem to find resonable price for srt black headlights (500-700 each)(justforjeeps) because you need the HID lights. Have you seen them cheaper anywhere?

Thanks BLXX

PS I will post before and after photos when im done

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

The Fog covers I have are factory on the non-Summit editions. If I remember correctly the fog covers pop out so you can install the chrome ones like yours. Im looking to get a set of chrome so we could work a swap for those too if you're interested.

Here are the fog directions: http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82212341.pdf

No information on fender flares -- haven't seen any. Check with Rocky Road Outfitters

Best I have seen for headlamps is the price you indicated, one Member, Scottina06 has an export set for sale... http://www.jeepgarage.org/f12/new-11...nse-58700.html -- I'd buy them if i had the cash, need to sell some stuff on eBay fast

Also, here are the instructions for the Mirror caps: http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82212218.pdf

Just checked RRO and they do indeed have fender flares: Jeep Grand Cherokee Fender Flares: 2011 &*Newer Jeep Grand Cherokee Fender Flare Kits

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

M hassler,
I appreciate the help. So you d be interested swapping fog covers. Are yours currently installed? I assume their black. How would we work the swap? Im in Wisconsin and you?

As far as the grill insert goes, i actually found the black altitude grills on line and they come with chrome inserts which i like. So i would want to sell the complete chrome grill with the chrome insert.

Just got the 20X10 matte black srt8 rims from wheel city on ebay installed they look sharp. So I have a set of 2013 overland summit brushed chrome wheels and tires for sale with approx 800 miles.

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

I may be interested in the grill, I want to try painting the grill black chrome with a duplicolor kit I found to match my rims. What would you want for the factory grill and would it fit a 2012?

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

^yes, the 2013 Summit grille will fit your 2012. Welcome to the forum... lots of great information to be found here.

BLXX -- I've decide to have my fog covers paint matched instead of switching to the chrome. Also, would you mind taking a few side-by-side photos of the Altitude and Summit grille? I'd like to see the difference, if any, between the inner honeycomb grille on the two. I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the Altitude grille or if I want to buy a Summit grille and then color match the outer portion. Thanks,

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

welcome to the forum im sure you are going to get the bug we all got when we got our jeep and found this site....get ready to learn alot and if you ever have a question im sure someone has already asked it so check around....

as for the chrome around you windows i know alot of members have been either vinyl wrapping or plasdi dipping. both low cost and if your handy very easy to do.

also if you are thinking about selling your rims to go with the srt ones let me know i might be interested in taking them off your hands...

enjoy

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

I have replaced my 2013 overland summitt rims and tires. They are 20 x 8.5. They have less than 1000 miles and are sitting in my garage looking for a home.

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

I am in the middle of blacking out my entire 2012 Grand Cherokee Limited, which has the Pearl Black body color.

I found a number of parts I needed on AllMoparParts.com. Here are some part numbers that might help:

Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Blacked Headlamps (68170682AA 68170683AA) = $285.00
Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Blacked Out "Jeep" Emblem (68185492AA) = $7.07
Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Blacked Out Rear Panel (See Desc.) = $170.50
Type 5LL22AXRAA - Brilliant Black (PXR) with back-up camera cut out
Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Grille - Brilliant Black (1ZW79AXRAA) = $363.66
Jeep Grand Cherokee Black Honeycomb Grill Inserts (68143074AD) = $42.81
Jeep Grand Cherokee Emblem - Gloss Black (68193410AA) = $39.84

The remaining parts I need to source are:a

Door handles
Mirror caps (mine are chrome)
Rear hatch load guard plate
Front lower valance trim
Roof rails
Door protectors/trim
Window trim

The door handles can be purchased in "body color", so they are no problem with a vin from a black Jeep Grand Cherokee in your model year.

The mirror caps are problematic, because they can't be "replaced". I can order new mirrors, or try to remove and re-chrome in "black chrome". I will probably buy new mirrors (expensive?).

The rear load hatch guard can be ordered, I just haven't done so yet.

I have not been able to get an answer on the lower front valance trim.

The roof rails and door protector trim should be available under a VIN from a 2013 Grand Cherokee Altitude. I have a VIN of 1C4RJFAG4DC582305 from a 2013 black Altitude that was for sale. Using this VIN, the parts desk at my Jeep dealer found that the part numbers where "greyed out", and not something they could order. They are calling Mopar and getting back to me on this.

The window trim is apparently NOT available in black for any model. I plan to buy a new set, have the chrome chemically removed, and re-chromed in black chrome.

Plasti-dip looks like crap, doesn't last, and is a flat tone. If you want a nice, glossy black to match your car, it is not the answer. Nothing beats the right factory parts in the right finish, but black chrome is second best. IMHO, of course.

Re: Help new 2013 grand cherokee trim modifications

I located an aftermarket skidplate which takes care of the front lower valance issue:

Grand Cherokee skidplates, 2011 and newer

Rocky Road also has lots of trick parts for the front end to allow for a hidden winch, but also nice light mounts. They carry a lot of other components, but I'm not looking for offroad stuff. If I was, I would check them out!

That grill insert is for a 2014 model summit...will that fit a 2011-2013 grill???
