Re: i hate my rims..but im poor

I just recently learned that "chrome clad" means "saving money by gluing a plastic chrome facade over an aluminum wheel and charging a premium price."

I was seriously considering buying take-off 2008+ summit 18" wheels. I finally saw the wheel w/o a tire up close and was really glad I didn't spend hundreds on ebay without seeing them first. Almost did...I even considered a new set and they are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. One could buy some really nice wheels for what the dealership wants for those. I guess they're proud of them.

Someone told me they are easier to maintain, which might be true. But I was still kind of disappointed to learn many manufacturers are doing this. I guess I couldn't tell from two feet away...I really like the look of the stock 18" 7 spoke summit wheels, too.

Re: i hate my rims..but im poor

I was going to do the powder coat thing but impatience + boredom + lack of cash led me to pull a DIY project. Powdercoating was only like $300 and a week w/o a vehicle but its winter in a seasonal place sooo.... Anyways it came out good though IMO. I washed them really good with dawn and water than dried them good. Used auto primer, engine paint, wheel clear coat (2-2.5 coats of each) annnnnndddddd taaa daaa.......

Re: i hate my rims..but im poor

I've heard about using self etching primer on chrome before painting it but I've never tried it myself

Re: i hate my rims..but im poor

that looks really good for a DIY. my powdercoater charges me 30 a wheel, thats prep and all and this is my spare set of rims, so i dont have to go without a ride. i just got them today so now i have to decide what i want to do with them, all black or just black around the edge.

That looks incredible! Making me want to mess around with the stock wheel set I've got in the garage!

Thats a sick deal. I was quoted 75 a rim prob would've gone ahead and done it for 30.

Thanks for the nods and what not fellas. I've washed them at the car wash twice since I did them. Scrubbed them with the brush like regular and just didn't use the high pressure on the hose. Still looking good
