I have been in process of taking off or switching the chrome pieces on my 2014 GC Overland, I rebadged all the logos with black gloss logos, took off the front Jeep logo permenatly, ordered new black oem grill trim rings. The mirrors and door handles were the big problem. The cost to replace was just not worth it basically around $1600 plus. So on those items I ordered the black covers for mirrors and door handles, I have bright white GC and after placing them in to see how looks I didn't like it. So I have them painted at professional paint shop which cost $150 and the covers meaning all the door handles and mirrors were $89. Here is what the look like and will post pictures after I stick them on this weekend.
Curious to see how this turns out...what is your plan for the chrome button that will show through the door handle?
I bought a set of these door handles as well in black, but probably won't put them on since you can still see the chrome around the outside edge...at least I could when I did a test fit anyway.
I did test fit and they seem to cover up anyone would notice, I couldn't justify paying $1200 to buy white door handles and install. I don't think anyone would be able to tell.
Not to hijack, only to provide insight, I just got a call from my auto paint shop. I dropped off my black covers to get color matched painted to my white Jeep Overland. One of the techs who owns a Jeep expressed that he "thought" the chrome was a cover on our cars and that under the chrome was white. While I immediately said "hey buddy keep it moving and paint my stuff" I felt it was worth while to chat about here... Anyone heard this before?
The chrome plating or "show chrome" is just that, it's a chrome plated plastic. If you peel back the chrome from the surface, you'll be left with bare ABS plastic underneath. When I had my Durango, I did this process on 2 front fascia pieces, the chrome peels off like a piece of tape. After that I sanded the ABS, primed, painted, cleared and it looked amazing. This process is VERY labor intensive and requires a lot of patience.
So in your opinion, just having the mirror and handle covers painted to match the paint, would be cheaper than having the chrome peeled, prepped, and painted to match?
My guy has me out the door for 159.00 to paint the current items, will find out tomorrow if he wants to look at peeling my chrome, prep, and painting.. if so, cost update coming. Sounds intense.
Well just finished installing my covers today and they look perfect!
Anyone that thinks it's better to replaces the door handles and mirrors and wants to waste 1700 dollars plus feel free, this was 89 for covers and 150 to have them professionally painted and they look factory. Nobody would be able even tell the difference unless you knew what you were looking for
Yeah I am really happy with them they are spot on when i test fitted them I made sure they were exact before having them painted, changes the whole look of the car now and no more chrome on those big pieces...
So mine just came in from Ebay, I don't think my door handles fit as well as yours. You can see rows of chrome behind them (near the inside of the door). Did yours do that?
There is some from behind but unless you were looking over the top inside you would not see anything at all, I test fitted mine probably 10 times on each door, there will be a little chrome showing on inside of the handle but from outside fully covered and the edges as well so I am more then happy to say the least.
Yeah that's basically what I got showing too. I'm just wondering if it's going to be enough to aggravate me everytime I reach for my auto-unlock door handle. I will play around with it some more. Mine might even be less noticeable since my car is Billet Silver. It blends with chrome a little better than just straight up white or black would.
I think with the silver you will be ok once you have the paint matched, trust me i am very anal and was like not sure, but the chrome showing on back side looks factory and you cant even tell. The way I looked at it is I have 28k for miles, I powder coated the wheels, debadged the chrome logos and did gloss black, grill trim rings chnaged to black with replacement oem ones. So basically stuck about $1000 bucks into it to get it to look much better hate the chrome. I will sell it at around 45k -50k miles . It will only be worth 22-24k max in value, trade in maybe 20k. It wasn't worth $1600 dollars to replace mirror caps and door handles since won't make it worth a penny more. The mirror cap cover fit so perfect it crazy. It would be like throwing $1600 into the air, that was my thought haha
No you are right. I am just being overly protective because I only just hit 1000 miles on mine. It's my first new vehicle ever, and I actually plan to try to keep it at least 5 years since I plan on buying some type of water craft to pull with it. Plus I just really love the look of this generation of Grand Cherokees. I already debadged mine, and I plan on painting my chrome grill rings this weekend to a satin black. Tell me, how did you handle the fog light bezels, the rear tail light bezels, and the chrome around the windows? I'm leaving my front tow hooks chrome and the exterior around them chrome.
Also, for your mirror caps, did you find that the bottom left corner sticks out a bit? My adhesive strips didn't look like they were going to be in a position to make the corners lay flat. Thanks for all the advice and input! I appreciate it.
The mirror caps fit like glove, I actually order 3m double sided tape same thickness and width and added few more strips on edges etc so they pulled tight evenly, you just have to make sure when you do put it on you do it right or you will have to pull it off and do it again which I found out the hard way haha. I basically didnt do fog light or tailight but did order the black rear step pad trim in black have to install this weekend. The 16 High altitude basically has eveything black except the window trim and fog and tailight bezels all blacked out so it looks clean. I might have the bezels wrapped in gloss black depending how much but for now its pretty good. The tailight bezels in black are $159 and Fog light bezels are $129. Tailight are easy to change out from what I have watched but fog bezels you need to remove the from bumper which I refuse to do since it seems to never go back the same so would rather wrap those.
Yeah taking the bumper off doesn't seem like a whole lot of fun. May have to ask some of my mechanic friends about that since I definitely plan on doing the bezels both front and back.
Taking the front bumper off literally takes about 10 minutes, no need to be scared or apprehensive about doing it. You don't "have to" remove it to change the fog bezels though, if you just pull the felt liner away in the wheel well, you can gain access to the back side of the fog bezels...although in my opinion this is a more cumbersome and awkward process than removing the bumper.
I had the exact same fitment issues with the door handle covers, you can see a chrome outline around the entire handle.
Thanks to this thread, I completed this project last night. Took about 3 weeks post handle/mirror cover purchase for the body shop to get a white jeep in to paint, piggy backed that and had the setup painted for 100.00. Patience is a virtue? After having multiple weeks to mull it over, ended up going black mirrors, white handles, really felt the mirrors would "blend" to the body a bit more than white. Thoughts?
Agreed, I like the way those black mirrors offer some contrast in conjunction with your wheels. Black out the window trim and the roof rails and it'll look SWEET! So those are mirror covers right, not painted chrome?
Thank you! Yes they're the 89.99 setup from the link posted above. The shop cleared the mirror covers, and paint matched the handles. Very satisfied with the finished product, especially bc the chrome slivers that show, are in all reality, very small.
Window trim will be wrapped by the EOTM. 250.00 is a hefty price tag for what they're really doing.
The roof rails I've found 2 options;
Wrap the entire rail, and or just the outer wall you see from the side.
Remove this entire setup and go with the SRT/Altitude slim black look. From what I understand I'll have to modify some bolts as this is not a direct bolt on? Any Input?

I want to take the roof rails off my limited also and go with the flat ones. I read something about the air bags blocking the bolts or something? is this true?
For the roof rails I'd just sand and paint them, or an alternative (which I plan to do) is use DupliColor Shadow, it's basically a tint for chrome/polished products. I like the idea of the low profile ones but can't exactly justify it just to make them black.
Since there is already some black showing due to the door handle gaskets, I'm wondering if some 1/4" black vinyl strips could be added to the tops of the handles to hide those chrome strips before the handle caps are added. It should blend in with the black handle gaskets and hide the chrome. The top is about all that would show anyway. Whatcha think?
Since the new rails are lower profile, my guess would be that the standard "nutserts" would be too long for the lower rails. These are pre-set into the roof line and would probably need to be cut down to allow the rails to sit flush.
Any pics of the Jeep with black handles? And a picture of your mirror covers in black just cleared up close. Looking at snagging these but going with black
