Quick question about paint codes/colors

I went to the auto store to buy some duplicolor PXR brilliant black crystal spray paint but they dont stock it and it only shows as having it in the small touch-up bottle, but I need to paint my stillen headlight covers. Would a black mica match close to it? Also on a site I just saw the brilliant black crystal is called a "candy" color, and someone said i needed the right base coat and not just any regular primer before the color coat to make it match the stock color, is that right?

Re: Quick question about paint codes/colors

timmy im not sure about the colors,

i buy all my colored paint from automotivetouchup.com

alternatively, lots of 'body shop supply' places will sell you paint to color codes too.

the paint I get is a full color base. it has the metallic and all that. then you just need a CLEAR on top of it......

Re: Quick question about paint codes/colors

Im still wondering about the "candy" color comment I saw on that site, because the ground effects i had a shop paint do not match my car exactly. Its like they are black with no crystals or whatever in it. Im wondering if its because they didnt use the right base color.

I wanted to do this tonight, thats why I figured id ask on here, if the black is really close i wouldnt mind if its not perfectly exact. They had a black mica where the cap color seemed to be really close to my car. Think ill go grab a can and test it anyways, only 6 bucks.

Re: Quick question about paint codes/colors

yup, good idea. since they arent directly next to each other, it may look perfect.

i have OEM Grey wheels. everyone thinks they were matched to my Mineral Grey. They are very different but not to the 'avg joe.

Good Luck.

I went to a local auto supply paint store where they can mix me up some PXR and they have a spray bottle thing to spray the paint with so i'll do that if this doesnt work right now. I just grabbed a small can of Black Metallic for $2.56 at advanced auto since its all 50% off duplicolor paints. If it comes out like crap ill just redo it, no biggie

Here's my questions now. I have a set of the stillens that are already painted khaki i believe. So after sanding do i still use a primer, and then after the black color coat is a clear coat needed? I bought a big can of it anyways. But in the duplicolor book it says only a clear coat is needed if there is a "cc" next to the paint color, which on this can there is no "cc". And on the stillen site it doesnt mention applying a clear coat, just says paint then install. Im going in my basement right now to sand as much of the existing paint off as i can, because I noticed its a very tight fit over the headlights. And I have a grey primer, is that ok for black color because the duplicolor book said to use a black primer on black paints.

Im finally about to prime them right now. I ended up removing all the existing paint and primer that was on them down to the plastic. I used 220 to remove the paint, then used a 400 grit then an 800 finally. Im curious if after priming I use a 1000 grit . But for that i'd need to wait for it to fully cure a day probably correct?

Re: Quick question about paint codes/colors

Did I even need to remove all the existing paint and primer, or did i go overboard? I figured what the hell, get it all off while im sanding it anyways to have it hopefully come out the best it can.

Re: Quick question about paint codes/colors

once its smooth, it might be overkill.

those things are urethane and can be tricky to not get little bubbles on the edges. also i think requires a flexible primer. so if the finish was good before, i would of just scuffed them up with scotchbrite, a touch of primer, then color and clear if necessary.

Re: Quick question about paint codes/colors

I think it was better that I took them down to the plastic again. There were uneven surfaces along the edges where its curved around the headlights. The 220 grit allowed me to slightly reshape the edges round again, or as close to perfect as i could get them.

Is it me, or does every picture im seeing of these stillens on WK's not seem to match in paint color "perfect" to the car? All the ones ive seen appear slighty off in color. Does anyone have them where they match perfect to the car?
