removing plastic texture?

What is the best process for removing the texture on an 08 Lower air dam?

I bought a painted one that was supposedly OE paint but it was a spray can pained laredo part.

In the process of stripping the paint i have made some surface scratches on the part and i would like to have the whole part smooth any way so once its painted it will look better.

I am doing this because i cannot find the OE smooth part any where.

Re: removing plastic texture?

i think its a combo of fill some/sand/fill more sand more/

using a high fill primer and a orbital sander.

you want about a 320-400 grit for paint according to daniel....not tooo smooth so the paint has something to grab onto.

Re: removing plastic texture?

The shop that is painting it wants it bare plastic but will charge much more to detexture it.

Re: removing plastic texture?

ok. then remove the primer part and get you a good orbital sander and a box of pads of diff weight. I bet it wont take much to smooth it out.

or you can make me an offer for my red rocker one .........

What grit sand papers would work best so there are no marks? for ex. Start with 500 and work my way to 1500?

You have one in red rock? well the problem is i have one that i would need to sell that is not sellable right now. I paid $130 for mine shipped, and i dont have that kind of $$ right now so thats why i am trying to make this one work. I am sure you want at least that much so i will have to stick with mine for now as much as id love a pre painted OE air dam that i could just drop off for paint tomorrow.

Re: removing plastic texture?

yeah it prolly wont work with mine.......

you are way too smooth on your grits bro.
daniel always said he wants it no smoother than 400 or he needs to scuff it up to 400.

you need like 120/180/220/320/400 like that. and not every one.

Re: removing plastic texture?

Oh wow, i did not know it needed to be that rough, that makes it seem a bit less scary to get it all smooth then.

Thanks alot Rob, I will head to Home Depot tomorrow for some wet sand sand paper in a few of those grits.

Hopefully i can get this thing knocked out some time this week and drop it off for paint. The paint is already paid for so its just a matter of it being prepped for them to prep.

Re: removing plastic texture?

do US a favor and ask your painter about what he expects for a final grit....just so i can sleep. but I think it will be closer to 400 than 1500.
