Turtle wax label and sticker remover. I bought it at pep boys. Just spray it on the tape, let it sit for like 2 minutes, then use a scraper to get it off. That gets most of it off. Whatever's left just use the spray and scrub it with a scotchbrite pad. Worked great for me

looks like your bolt mount is actually beginning to lift...if you had something on there with your old roof rails that was catching air, and if you were going fast, there is a chance that bolt began to fail

mighta explain the fitment issue a little

Goo gone or my preference if you can get hold of it Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover - works a treat.

As for the bolt, I'd agree that it looks like the fastener has tugged metal of the roof up? Don't know how you could re-seat it though - careful bangs with a rubber mallet?
