Re: 11k miles and blown Transmission

When I was 19, doing probably my third oil change ever, this happened to me. The o-ring stuck on and I didn't realize it because it was hard to see based on the oil filter placement. It struck me as odd that as much as I tightened the new oil filter, it never seemed tight, but what did I know.

I started up the car and backed it out of the driveway and quickly noticed a stream of oil down the center of the driveway. I immediately got a towel and soaked up what I could while freaking out thinking about what my dad's reaction would be - but because it was brand new clean oil, whatever was left eventually evaporated and didn't leave a stain.

That said, you only make that mistake once! I also have no clue how an experienced tech at a dealership made that mistake, but I probably answered my own question.

LOL... with all of the electrical/software issues today I can't picture an electric Jeep.

It probably wasnt an experianced technician it was probably a high school student with a summer job, thats why things that seem simple like oil changes get botched. They dont waste their experianced high priced technicians time doing oil changes.

Re: 11k miles and blown Transmission

If I recall it would be very difficult on the V6 to get two O-Rings because it goes in a groove. You have to work to get the old one off. And get the new one on. I can this happening on the old canister type if the O-ring stuck to the engine.

But this V6 it's really hard to screw that up.

Yes do you own oil change. Saves me time and money.

You can see the O-Ring on the left close to the "Cap" at the top of the threads.

I learned that lesson on my father's 1967 Malibu, 283. I was 17, and every time I did an oil change after that I could picture the puddle of oil in the driveway.

We've had our 2014 V6 for a year and 2 months now and not one single problem and no warranty work..
9000 miles, 2 oil changes and no tsb or recalls or anything else done. I don't want to bring it in for recalls/tsb's since its running so good. I'm afraid I would start having problems if I had recalls or tsb's done.
Like they say..if it ain't broke don't fix it!

It also seems like we read about 10 negative stories for every one positive story. Of course if your not having any problems your probably not gonna waste time on the internet telling everyone. But on the other hand...if your having problems your probably gonna want everyone to know.

When my check engine light came on and the engine suddenly stopped delivering power, it was going into "self preservation mode" to protect the engine.

They did a complete oil change, fixed the problem, and ended up having to clean the entire engine compartment cause there was oil everywhere (the dealer that performed the botched oil change paid for that).

My question is, when my check engine light came on I looked at my EVIC and it showed my oil life at 53%. Shouldnt it have said something closer to 0%. Especially since I was within a month of an oil change anyway

Minor poo-poo on the happy ending. Given the description of the incident, and the fact that the oil basically blew out around the o-rings, you were likely running the engine with no or little oil pressure. You described "redlining" in your original post...

I'd be a little concerned about the longevity of that engine at this point and at the very least discussing this with the dealer that caused the filter problem...

I couldnt agree more. I am not planning on having this vehicle for more than another year (maybe more than a couple more months). I still have a backup camera issue that has yet to be resolved (2 visits and counting). I have no idea if I would go into another GC or switch to something else. All i know is I wont have the vehicle long enough for the longevity of the engine to be a concern
