120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

I don't know, and I left all my paperwork with the Jeep when I traded it in.

I agree.

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

I'm glad I have a zero deductible maxcare lifetime on my Jeep. It will definitely ease the pain in the future for any repairs.

My water pump went around 60k in my WK, naturally right before I traded it in 😡

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

The waterpump in my WK2 5.7L Overland blew the seal and bearings last week.

My Overland had 135,000 miles on the clock when it went and in hind sight it probably had a bad seal for some time. I replaced the thermostat myself about 20,000 miles ago after I noticed a small leak. The seal on the thermostat was partially broken leading to the leak. I had noticed the smell of anti-freeze after that and occasional steam from the engine after that but could never trace the source. There was also a woosh woosh sound coming from the engine while running that I couldn't trace either. It matched the revs of the engine and was less pronounced at higher revs.

Last week the seal finally went after noticing more steam then the gush of fluid streaming from the pulley. It appears the weep hole is on the bottom side of the pulley. The easiest way to see the pulley is to remove the air intake hose from the airbox to the throttle body. The problem with a slow leak is it drips directly onto another pulley and dissipates / blows off during engine running. When the water pump goes completely the fluid streams onto the other pulleys and sprays everywhere. It covered the alternator and I got a battery symbol. Luckily I was near home and made it back to the house where I could call the dealership from the comfort of home.

I had the waterpump replaced at the dealership. They had two in stock and I got my fixed as the other went to another WK2 that lost theirs. I cannot imagine being stranded on the side of the road far from home or away from a dealership, when the pump goes it really goes, so keep an eye out for the warning signs, small leaks, smell, and bearing noise.

Total cost was just over $600 for the parts, labor and taxes. If I had the time I may have completed the job myself but I needed the Jeep back quickly and they completed the job in a few hours. The sound I had been hearing from the engine is also gone after the installation of the new pump, my guess is bearing noise from the water pump.

Also, the new pump and repairs came with a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty. Hopefully the new pump will last as long as the first.
