120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

2014 JCG Summit V8 with 60K miles. Last week noticed loud idle, drove to repair shop today (no dealer since I'm out of warranty), immediately diagnosed as loose water bump (which also contains a thermostat). Guy says we'll order OEM I agreed and left (24hr turn time). Guy calls me right back and says MOPAR water pump unavailable 120+ back order - apparently this is a huge problem. You can't drive car with loose water pump.... So now I'm going non-OEM, hopefully it's a better product, not sure how I feel about OEM part going in only to break again. I think the total, post tax/everything will be about $850.00. Sucks......Not sure what these other jeep owners are going to do - guy said mopar laughed when another water pump was requested......

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

I called Jeep after searching this site and locating numerous water pump issues - turns out it's part of the powertrain warranty (I totally over looked it - 5YR/100K mi). Regardless, I'm going to pursue the repair, scheduling a dealership apt, confirm the diagnosis, and waiting longer for an OEM part, will still take a great deal of time. I know many of you probably thing I'm an idiot for not going the warranty route, but I need this fixed ASAP. The woman at jeep customer service told me the dealership would not install anything other than OEM, which I don't feel was entirely correct - but helps me justify leaving it at a repair shop. Obviously, right thing for the repair was to mention this might qualify as 100k mi PT warranty work, but that's pushing money out the door and in this day/age who can actually expect someone to do the right thing.....just frustrated the mopar/jeep can't engineer a simple water pump to last longer than 60k mi (other threads, longer than 28k mi)

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

One of the most alarming things i have seen on this site is the water pump failure on Jeeps. Its almost a given its going to happen to everyone within 50k miles it seems by reading all the post here. This combined with all the other things i read here really would have me switch to another brand IF there was anything out there that looked as good for under 50k.

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

Had similar symptoms as you and took the gamble by taking it in to the dealer as I was outside the warranty as well. You could probably argue with the dealer to have them remove a pump from a build off the lot if they can't get one in soon enough for you. If not, I would argue they cover a rental till it gets fixed. It's dumb this is an issue as my 05 Ram has the original pump in it with no issues on that component, 160k+ miles, but my Jeep has it fail right around 50k miles.

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

My water pump failed a couple of weeks ago at 49,000 miles. Dealer fixed it on the spot as they had the pumps in stock and it was part of the 100k drivetrain warranty. No charge. They also offered me a free rental as they were going to do the shifter recall at the same time (4+ hours).

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

My water pump and thermostat quit at 56k miles,

Waterpump is covered under power train but Thermostat was not so paid my $100 maxcare and waited.

My dealer was Kings Jeep they have like 50 plus service bays and apparently hoard parts...

Re: 120 WK2s SIDELINED - Water Pump

when these pumps on the 5.7 fail how much time do you usually have to get to a dealer? does it start dumping large amounts of fluid in a fairly short span of time? I guess my concern is being on a trip hundreds of miles from home and getting stuck on the side of a highway somewhere? or is it something that I could carry a jug of coolant with me and add some to get me a decent distance home?

You have to do what you have to do. My only advice is to make sure you get a brand new aftermarket pump instead of a remanufactured unit.

Ouch, my dealer charged me $30 or so bucks for the thermostat and covered the labor under the warranty to replace the pump.

My 2012 was undriveable. I thought it was my Jeep was on fire as smoke was rolling out from under the hood. I called the fire dept, then a tow truck. I had caught the antifreeze leak a couple weeks before and had the dealer look at it and they replaced the thermostat then a week later the huge catastrophe occurred, then the dealer replaced the water pump. I told them to consider the water pump on the first visit, but you know typical crappy Chrysler dealer.

Do you know if the new water pump they put on it was a revised part number say an AD vs an AC or anything like that or are they just throwing the same old ones on there since 2011 to fail in another 30-40k? I honestly wish mine would just fail before I go on my next trip so I could get a new one on it. Sounds like this isn't just a couple of isolated incidents if its drained the parts supply of these nationwide.

Shouldn't be rocket science here to come up with a revised bearing/seal combo that lasts at least 120k miles like most vehicle water pumps on the road for the last 50 years.
