Theoretically, but don't forget there's a deductible. Many folks have the MaxCare Extended Service Contracts with $100 deductibles...I'm one of them. So what I've done is have anything applied while they are doing other work and my dealer is fine with that...even with an Oil Change and Tire Rotation.

Re: $135 for 7 software module updates?

Yep....they sure charge for TSB's when you are out of warranty. Took my '11 in last summer for an oil change and out of habit told them to be sure and check for TSB's. I only had 18,000 miles on it and was still getting free oil changes. When I went to the window they charged me $15 for one TSB. I had not even thought about being 1 month over my 3 year warranty. Now I make them pull it up on the computer and check for TSB's when I check in so I can see what they are for.

Software updates are not safety related and do infact cost money to have done if out of warranty. I was in a while back to have my first oil change done on my 2014 Summit. He told me there were 5 software updates available that they can do free of charge so I ended up getting them done. I'm only at 5,700 miles on my '14 so it's well within warranty but it took about an hour and cost nothing. Noticed no differences just like he said.

Heck Tesla gives free software updates (while your vehicle is in your garage) --- even those that include all kinds of amazing new vehicle features. That's the future.

$135 for 7 software module updates?

Is this a 'scam' (not necessary) or something I should do?

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

Thanks guys!

I doubt it's a scam, these Jeeps have constant module and software updates coming out. I have a 2015 with just over 3k and when I was in for my first oil change the dealer ended up doing three updates for me and a forth I brought to their attention (alpine amp update).

I mean if you don't see seven items listed when they are printing the invoice you can just simply dispute the charges with the service manager. Either that or negotiate the fact you just bought 4 tires from them.

If I were you, I would have gotten them done regardless. Nine times out of ten they are only meant to help improve the overall drive ability of your jeep.

as reluctant as I would have been to pay the $135 in that situation, I probably would have had them done also. the only exception being if you have the 845RE trans and its running fine, I would not let them flash that. given the history on those things id be concerned that a new flash may induce an issue on a correctly running trans.

Dan, I have to agree with you on this, but the future will also bring us $100,000 Jeeps.

I think the traditional auto companies are still looking at tech and software as "add-ons" versus the real core of the auto (everything from the radio to self-driving). Other companies - Tesla, Google, Apple and others - see software as the "magic" that controls everything and build hardware around that. Electric cars are the future and it isn't a matter of if, but when ... and the when all depends on battery technology to make the batteries more economical, charge fast, and as small and light as possible.

Self-driving cars will be interesting. While I like driving most of the time, it sure would be nice to be chauffeured around too in a self-driving car - less stress in heavy crazy traffic, etc.

Better question, why are you getting new tires at 37K? I'm at the same mileage and still have over 50% tread life.

Re: $135 for 7 software module updates?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wasn't having any issues with the jeep so I didn't have any of the updates done. Maybe I'll consider on my next oil change.

Won't be going back to that dealer. Took them about 20 minutes to try to find the prepaid invoice in accounting, couldn't find it so just printed some alternative. Said car is out front ready to go. I go outside and no car. Had to wait another 10 minutes for them to pull it around. Tires were fine but all sorts of dirty with white crap on them. Literally took 30 minutes to just pick the car up, and it was prepaid!

Needless to say, won't go back to that dealer.

I probably could have gone another 5-10k or so but would rather get some decent rubber before winter.

And the original forteras were crap. Do you have the forteras?
