$135 for 7 software module updates?

Got some new tires put on at the dealership today... they said there was "7 software modules" that have updates available, and they want to charge me $135 to do them since I am out of warranty.

Is this a 'scam' (not necessary) or something I should do?

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

Thanks guys!

Ouch, really. Wow. I guess it depends on what the updates are. Software updates should be free regardless since could be safety related. Perhaps a nominal dealer charge for time.

Since you are just over the warranty, any decent dealer would do it for free.

Re: $135 for 7 software module updates?

I told him i'd pass for now... doesn't seem like anything mandatory anyways. Honestly, just sounded like a sales pitch to me. Hey, can we take $135 from you and pretend we updated some software?

First time i've been to this dealer and they don't have the best reputation.

Just got tires there because they were having a good sale. And you can't really screw up putting on tires.

Also, I agree, if it was a safety issue it would be a recall, not optional.

Technically you are out of warranty but that's kind of crappy they would not just do that for you considering you just spent probably a grand on tires with them. $135 is a little bit much, did they give you a list of what they were?

3 years or 36,000 miles. I'm at 37,500.

...and they want you to pay $135 for some flashing??? That is weak sauce. They are being a bit punitive; considering you threw a kilo-buck at them for tires...

However, $135 is a little more than an hour of labor, and a SW flash on 7 different modules should take about that long.

I have one module to be re-flashed and I am looking at $60 from the local dealer. Unfortunately, the 'typical' hobby mechanic is unable to do this (...yet).

Re: $135 for 7 software module updates?

Ask him what the updates are for. If they are Uconnect stuff, you can get it online. If they are for the transmission or engine or anything else, they are probably TSB's or recalls that you should get free no matter your warranty status.

What an assclown, I think I'd avoid that dealer in the future and make sure you tell him why.

You check

...or you don't care unless you've noticed an issue?

Re: $135 for 7 software module updates?

TSBs aren't free, may not be covered even under warranty, although the wording about a vehicle not exhibiting the issue could be taken to mean you read the TSBs on wk2jeeps and describe the symptom taken from them...

SERVICE BULLETINS ARE NOT A WARRANTY ITEM FOR VEHICLES OUT OF WARRANTY. It is important to note that "Preventive" service repairs will generally not be performed under warranty during the normal warranty period if a vehicle is not exhibiting the particular symptom or problem. TSB's are not recalls. If you ask your dealer to perform the modification outside of the warranty period, expect to pay for the labor and parts.

Still, it does sound a tad cheapskate to try to ding you for more after they made a pretty decent profit on tires--typically more than on the vehicle itself percentagewise.

Re: $135 for 7 software module updates?

Are these updates things that would be covered under one of the extended service plans?
