'14 Limited vs. '14 Overland resale value (residual)?

Can anyone sway me not to pick the v6 4x4 Overland over the Limited? The only thing I am slightly worried about is usually higher option car models tend have a worse resale value. Historically, is that the case with the Grand Cherokee?

I just don't want to lose my a$$ on the extra $7,000 the Overland costs.

I can't. I just went through this with my dad. By the time he'd optioned up the Limited with what he wanted, we were within $700 of the Overland.

Essential, probably not. But desirable (sunroof, nav, Lux and Tow group). In any event he's deciding between the Laredo and the Overland. The Limited was too close to the Overland to stay in the running.

IMO the Overland will always have better resale value all other things being equal. If you get a good enough deal then you will greatly reduce the bath you take when it drives off the dealers lot. I know not everyone has the luxury of living around a huge city with 40+ dealers, but for example, I bought my 2012 Overland new back in march of 2012 and sold it last month with 9,200 miles for the exact price I paid for it new minus taxes. From what I can tell these Grand Cherokees are holding their values nicely. I can only speak for myself, but if I were shopping for a used Grand Cherokee I would require it be a loaded Overland, not a limited.

Unless you are talking about a stripped Limited or Laredo, I don't know where you are coming up with $7000.

But, why are you worrying about that. If the extra options are not important enough to pay for them, don't buy them. Just be sure you can pay for what you buy, then go buy what you want.

If gas goes to $10 a gallon, or they perfect an electric car, none of these Jeeps are going to hold their value.

Are you leasing? My guess is the residuals are the same. Money Factors might be lower on the Limited than the Overland.

The Jeep website says $45,995 for the 4x4 v6 Overland, and $37,795 for the 4x4 v6 Limited. That's a difference of $7,000. Not sure where any confusion is coming from.

Ah, I see now.

Its all about options. Their point is if you want the features of the Overland, you can have many of them on the Limited but the price comes within $700 of the Overland, so for that $700 you get the added style, leather dash, QL, etc.

If I wanted those options, I wouldn't even consider a Limited over an Overland. If you want a base Limited, then sure the difference is $7,000. Bear in mind a base Limited now doesn't even have HIDs, etc. Its basically a Laredo X.

Options loose value faster than the base value of a car, so resale wise a base Limited will retain a better % of its value than a loaded Limited, and a base Overland will retain a better % of its value than a loaded Limited. If you're leasing though the residual may be lower on the Overland, making a loaded Limited a better lease deal coupled with likely a lower money factor.

If you trade in a base Limited in on a new vehicle in a few years you'd probably fair better than trading in am Overland especially if it had added options. Unless you luck out and trade itat a Jeep dealership who will pay you a premium for the actual value of the Overland.

I don't know if thats really the case.

People in the used market are going to be looking for "an Overland". What gets lost in the used market are the Lux Groups, and ORA packages, etc. Buyers will pay more for "an Overland" than they would "a Limited" whether that Limited had almost everything the Overland has or not.

From a resale perspective I think you're better off with an Overland than a fully loaded Limited.
