Jeep's interior designer who stayed when Daimler left claims it is more natural to show the grain and grooves of the wood. I don't see the big deal. Can you get a sliver on this new open-pore wood? ouch! j/k. Anyway, I think they're using it as a marketing gimmick sort of like they always mentioned the tiny iconic Jeep grille inside of the headlights. I don't see it as any better, just different.

Woodworking is one of my hobbies. I very seldom use a finish that fills all the pores in the wood, except table tops. I also like Zebra wood which will be in my Overland.

If I wasn't involved with using wood, the open pore trim wouldn't make a difference. I wouldn't worry too much about splinters.

Pretty sure they just want you to know that it is the real deal, unlike the 2011-13's. In the Overlands and Summits it was difficult to tell the difference between the real and fake wood treatments since the real wood had such a thick lacquer treatment on it.

Yeah, I saw the fake wood on the Laredo and thought it looked just fine and would have been happy with that in my Summit if it would have saved $300+ because you can't really tell.

It is like people raving about hand scrapped wood floors....I'm always like "what?" "who cares?" "you mean uneven floors that make tables wobbly?" LOL I guess I was commenting on the "open pore wood" because Jeep seems to be making such a big deal about it.....more so than the 8 speed transmission.
