'14 Summit vs BMW 7 Series

My beloved Jeep was rear-ended today. The guy driving the BMW was too busy looking at his phone to notice that traffic had stopped & he hit us going about 40mph while we were at a dead stop. He tried to avoid hitting us but ended up going under the Jeep which bent the crap out of his $2000 rims, then continued on to lightly side-swipe 2 other cars. The guy was apologetic & readily provided proof of insurance. We're letting our insurance handle our repair and diminished value claim so we can avoid the hassle. Not liking the direction of the rear wheel.

No one was injured, thank goodness, but we'll be watching for emerging neck pain in the next week or so. Won't be able to get an estimate until Monday at the earliest and not sure if I'd rather she be repaired or just totaled so I can start over. Definitely will be getting another WK2 Summit, but might go with a diesel since I tow a camper quite often. We actually have a week-long camping trip scheduled for the end of March so here's hoping we have resolution by then.

Re: '14 Summit vs BMW 7 Series

Sorry to hear about your wreck. Good to know the jeep held up well and no one was injured with that speed of a collision.

My guess is your ride is going to be totaled. Your frame is probably bent, axle snapped, new rear lift gate, rear bumper, left side paneling, left side rear wheel. Better option then getting it repaired as that is a lot of stuff to be repaired/alot of stuff that can be missed.

Best of luck on the purchase of a new Summit. Hope the pain doesnt come days later and your family remains healthy

Re: '14 Summit vs BMW 7 Series

You will find out that the repairs are not cheap. I was rear ended in july , I was doing 90 KM and the guy that hit me said he was doing 130 KM but I know he was going faster. I had time to say he was going to hit us and I hit the gas to minimize the impact as much as possible. The total repair bill was just over 14,000 , this was for a complete new bumper , left quarter panel , 1 rim , half an exhaust , left side lights , 2 wiring harnesses and to fix the dent in the lift gate. There was no frame damage to my jeep. I am surprised they fixed it at a cost of 14k , but I was not impressed only having the jeep for under 4 weeks then it was in a body shop for a month.

The gf is still recovering with physio from the accident after all this time , so be very very careful and don't clear the claim saying you are fine. She did not feel the effects of the accident until 3 days later.I would recommend getting a lawyer so that you get everything you are entitled to for repairs and if you need it any medical costs.

Hard to see, but looks like the rear door has a gap between the roof line and top edge of the door which would indicate frame bent to some extent, bottom line is try to fight for a total, car never will be the same.

Ouch, that s**ks...

Looking at the second image, I'd say the guy who hit you was driving a 6 Series..

You could very well be correct. 😊 I didn't look at the badge myself and thought the guy said it was a 7 but perhaps my recollection has been a casualty. 😜

I'll take better pics tomorrow when I go to the body shop. There were tons of emergency workers around and I didn't want to get in the way. It really hurt when they started sweeping broken bits of my baby off the road.

'14 Summit vs BMW 7 Series

Wow I'm so sorry. Hopefully no neck pain emerges. I am curious.. Did your headrests pop out or whatever they do? Since they're 'active head restraints'? Did getting rear ended push you off the side of the road like that or did you pull off the best you could?

How many miles on your Summit?

For the life of me I can't recall if the headrests deployed or not. Hubby had noticed the BMW driving a bit 'distracted' behind us and when he stopped, left plenty of space between us & the car ahead since we were on a blind curve with no shoulders and he anticipated an issue. He saw the guy coming up around the curve & tried to direct the car to the right upon impact. We were pushed several car lengths forward but fortunately didn't hit anyone else.

Wow, 4 cruisers for a fender bender? Are ya sure he wasn't a wanted felon? Good luck with your claim . . .

Re: '14 Summit vs BMW 7 Series

GCOverland was right...looking at that last shot of the BMW, it's definitely a 2 door 6 series convertible. At least you can get a little satisfaction out of knowing that he F*ed up his own baby.

With all the damage to yours, I would be hoping for it to be totaled so you can get a new 2016...glad you're ok.

Re: '14 Summit vs BMW 7 Series

The bottom line is that I hope there are no continuing injuries. The vehicle thing will get sorted out. I also share the concern mentioned about things being twisted up because of the oblique angle of the hit...if internal damage mirrors what's visible, I'm hoping you get a total and can avoid enduring "weirdness" from just a fix.

Would have been funny to have the 'shin wrecker' go through the BMW's rad.
