Padgett, do you ever have facetime with a flesh and blood human? You make me feel like a Luddite! I have a flip phone in the console that is turned off, and used in emergencies, after I pull off the road and turn it on.

Yes, traffic is part of the XM/Sirius service and they charge separately for the music and traffic services.

Re: '14 - UConnect Access Trial Expiration and Renewal Cost

I agree that 19.99 is a bit to much for what they offer (lock/unlock car, remote start, yelp and 911). As far as YELP is concerned for some reason it seems like that the version that UCOnnect uses has less data. When I use my cell phone I get probably 2 or 3x more locations.

I actually like the ability to remote start my car as I use park and ride so before I get on a train I can start my car so it is nice and warm when I get there (about 10 minute train ride).

I don't mind paying for service that I use but I think this is just to expensive.

I pay $4 for Pandora. I pay $12 for Aereo (TV service). Both of those services offer A LOT more and cost significantly less.

I get the fact that they are paying Sprint for cell connection but that so far caused more grief on my side (infamous Vehicle Phone Requires Service) that I was struggling with up until last Uconnect update (Dec 13). I guess I should get at least a year extra for beta testing their buggy software and being annoyed by nagging popup in 50K car.

My advice to CHrysler/Jeep would be to think how can they provide some more value for that 19.99. They do have a nice technology stack but there is just not much there of value. Think apps. How about an app that enables you to show speed traps and alert you or app that allows you to download and overlay 4x4 trails for your Jeep. How about being able to send an address to NAV from your PC so you don't have to type all that nonsense. How about ability to check location of your car (let's say you are a parent and want to know where your kid is). How about ability to send your location to somebody to their cell phone - kind of: "hey, can you meet me here?". I could think of probably other usage where you don't need to send tremendous amount of data and create some use for it.

Platform has ENORMOUS potential. Chrysler is just not utilizing it. If they would think about it they could have a next "killer app" on their hands.

As far as SirusXM. I don't plan to pay for music subscription. I don't see a reason. They have all those channels but maybe 2 or 3 I would listen to. Quality sucks also (audio quality and constant searching for signal at least where I am). Would rather listen to HD radio or Pandora.

What I'm probably going to pay for is Traffic (I like the way it integrates with NAV) and TravelLink. I believe weather is part of travel link. When camping in some isolated places w/o cell service that proved to be quite a nice feature. Will try to haggle to get some nice long term deal.

It would be nice to see different plan options. an A la cart type of option. I only use the texting feature that reads texts to you, but I would not pay $20 a month for this feature. I use the remote start on cold mornings, but for the price they are charging, I can deal with a cold car for a few months.

Traffic for Sirius is an extra feature you pay for. I have found it to be useful if not always accurate.

Re: '14 - UConnect Access Trial Expiration and Renewal Cost

So here's a question...

Does the 911 feature work even if there is no UConnect subscription? I know my old flip phone in my drawer will successfully dial 911 even without a plan or number attached to it. Why wouldn't the phone built into the Jeep be able to do the same on the same cell system?

No, it won't.

Interesting. I wonder how they get around that? All cell carriers are required by the FCC to allow every device, even ones not currently subscribed, to call 911. Maybe there's a exemption deep in the law that excludes built in vehicle phones. Sounds like something the automakers lobby would do...

Re: '14 - UConnect Access Trial Expiration and Renewal Cost

It's not really a phone, just an air card. You have to use your own phone to make calls. The Jeep doesn't have a phone number like OnStar equipped vehicles do. It will only do 911 and Chrysler service entities on it's own.

I guess I was mixing that up with OnStar. My brother and I test drove a Cruze Diesel the other day as he's in the market for a diesel commuter. I remember the salesman talking about that.

BTW, do you work at the GE plant in Erie? Couldn't help but notice your avatar.

Used to work there. Retired 3 1/2 years ago after 40 years.
