'16 Dealer Pricing

Maybe this is wishful thinking on my part. The trend seems to be with the shortened model year 2016 to wait until the 2017's start production in July and purchase/lease at that time.

Apple Carplay, lane departure warnings, and other tech upgrades wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Otherwise the two models seem quite similar. I'm looking towards purchase as opposed to lease.

I was curious whether this decision for buyers to hold off for the 2017 model might affect dealer pricing on the 2016 model? I am sure they will be able to sell every 2016 JGC, I have no doubt of this. But will the buyer see some increased flexibility on pricing to meet dealer quotas? Maybe those that have purchased a 2016 could weigh in on this?

Getting 1% less on invoice pricing is easy enough with affiliate programs like Tread Lightly. I was just curious if deeper discounts might be affected by the short 2016 sales window. Are people getting more than 3% off invoice? Maybe I am wishing for too much and not recognizing supply and demand factors !

Yes people can get more than 3% under invoice, take KOONS on the east coast. I think they are sitting at 5-6% under invoice. Dealers want to make sales and you send them emails stating that you want a vehicle for a great price. I send emails to about 10-15 dealers looking for the best deal, driving 2hrs isn't a big deal if you can save $$$.

Re: '16 Dealer Pricing

In central Indiana, I've seen plenty of left over '15' advertised at 5% below invoice, and then another $1500 factory rebate from there. I did have a dealer quote me an additional $2000 below that for a '15.

As 16's go, they are advertising at about 1% below invoice, and the factory is already offering $1000 rebate on them. I'm sure there is more that can be had... just comes down to how hard you scratch and timing.

I'm about 2 weeks out from buying / ordering. My dilemma is to buy a '15 or '16. I don't really want to wait for '17 as that's not practical as I'd need to rent or buy an interim car.

I buy at EP pricing (father in law is Chrysler retiree) At face value, buying a '15 vs buying a '16 is only about $1200 difference when I factor in the cost increase of a '16 and $500 less of a rebate. Based on that I'd definitely get the '16. But at what point does it make more sense to get a '15? If I can stretch that difference to $3500 for a '15, does it start to make sense to save the $$ and just buy a leftover?

When comparing prices, also note the 2015 will be worth about 5% less than the 2016 down the road when you sell it, even if it has the exact same features and mileage as the 2016, since it is 1 model year older.

Re: '16 Dealer Pricing

I generally keep my vehicles for several years ( my present SUV is 12 years old but it has lasted far longer than I expected) so the residual value of the car/truck is negligible when I buy a new one because it has totally depreciated in value. It makes no difference to me in the long run whether I buy a 2015 vs 2016, or for that matter a 2016 vs a 2017. For me it depends upon what features I "need" and those that I "want".

If I wanted a BMW X5 I could buy one. I don't want one, I want a Jeep.

If you can find a 2015 that fits your needs, and you can save enough to make it worthwhile, it would make sense for me.

I don't know how long you keep your SUV/truck, but maybe you can work a deal on a lifetime service contract on the 2015 to really make it attractive.

Just my .02.

Re: '16 Dealer Pricing

Yes, I'm aware that the residual value is going to take a bigger hit right from the beginning on a '15 which is why I'd like to have a dealer take all or most of that hit for me to consider buying a 2015. Assuming I can still find the color / options / V8 I want.

In the end the $$ delta is not really that big of a concern... not that I like throwing around the cash, but I do like to be prudent. The '16 has the new gearshift which I happen to like better, but it also has the electric power steering and the aluminum front suspension components. I don't know if that is better or worse.
Obviously, if the new power steering setup screws with the driving feel, that would be a negative, or the aluminum suspension has issues.. then that would be another reason to try and stay in a '15. But if those are positives then getting a '16 would be the way I'd go.

It's all just an exercise right now, as I'm waiting til I can pull the trigger.
