1st generation(05-07) WK 4.7 vs 3.6 WK2penstar

Any owners go from 4.7 to 3.6 that want to give me their thoughts ?
The reason I mention 1st gen. is because 08-10 I guess had more power and a mile or two better gas mileage....

Here's my dilemma :
I have a 06 4.7 wk w/ 31"( 255/70's) & 2.5" RR lift .
I want a 2011 3.6 wk2 but I need better mpg and similar power .
It seems like most are getting about 18 mpg city/highway combined with the 3.6 ?
I get 12 mpg ; winter ( minnesota)
14 mpg summer
The 31" tires and lift only caused me to drop 1 mpg. If this holds true with the 2011 3.6, it will help out enough to let me live with 17mpg

I drove a 2011 3.6 last week at the dealer . It seemed like I had to keep the rpm's up to compete with the pickup of my 4.7 but i'm not really sure ?
The shift point's seem softer in the 3.6 and that/ along with the salesman breathing down my neck in the passenger seat could have thrown off my comparison alittle bit .
I know the hp is higher in the 3.6 but you cant go by that as its a totally different engine and there are too many other variables.

If I have to step on the pedal more ( especially w/ 31" or 32" tires) to get going like i'm used to w/ the 4.7 wouldn't that kill my projected mpg I think i'm going to get ?
I'm not a lead foot by any means . Just want to make sure its the same as mine

If this has been discussed let me know .
I couldn't find anything on it

I came from a 4.7 HO (04 WJ Overland ) to my 11 Limited 3.6. Short verison: There is no replacement for displacement. It did take me a short while to get used to the 3.6 but now, I've been completely happy. Granted it doesn't make power right off the start but I have pulled everything (boats, 17ft enclosed trailer, jet skis, etc..) with the 3.6 that I did with the 4.7 and used alot less fuel in the process. Seriously. The 3.6 is not the complete brick that some folks make it out to be. You just have to dig into the high rpms for an occasional smile. The 4.7's are quite impressive in my opinion and you will notice a difference right from the gate when comparing to the 3.6. For daily driving, the 3.6 is smooth, quiet, and efficient. For what I do and where I go, I personally have no need for a V8 in my commuter vehicle. Had my latest purchase been something to go fast, it would NOT have been a Jeep. I have plenty of toys in the stable to handle my speed fix.

Depends. My driving is quite mixed from day to day and most of the time there is something in tow or I'm in a hurry. I see 15-18ish for the city. Keep in mind, it's completely flat where I live, but traffic blows. Folks cannot drive a constant speed down here. It's hard for me to gather enough city driving for an avg honestly. I may be in town for 2 days then a 300 mile highway trip the next.

I just sold my 06 4.7 Grand Cherokeeand my wife has a 3.6 Durango Heat and heres my take on things.

The 3.6 feels more powerful IMHO stock for stock. The 4.7 seemed like it had a little more low end grunt....but it ends there. Once the rpm's in the 3.6 get a little higher in the rpm band....its a little more powerful than the 4.7. especially at highway speeds. The V8 does have a little more low end grunt for climbing steep grades...but once you get the rpms up on the 3.6 its just as comfortable.
gas mileage is no contest...my 4.7 was terrible.....10-12 mpgs where the 3.6 gets 20-21 in mixed driving and as much as 25-26 on long trips.

That'd be me.

I agree with Scott above. My 4.7 had good low-end power, whereas the 3.6 may lag/delay in the same band. But a little higher rpms, the 3.6 is nice and smooth. The 4.7 seemed geared a bit lower at highway speeds.

On the 4.7 I'd consistently get 12-16 mixed driving, in my 3.6 I get 20-24.

My only caution - I used the 3.6 to pull a 3/4 full Uhaul storage box (not aerodynamic at all, on a windy day). On the highway with only gentle inclines, the Jeep had a difficult time staying in 4th. So, not a pulling machine, but fine for my 2-3 trips to the dump each summer with the utility trailer.

Suspect the granny first in the '14 8-speed will make quite a difference off the line. That said I've always felt the 3.6 with 5 spd in my '12 is more than adequate & have another toy that is slightly beyond fast.

After trying to break it loose on a wet street I have to wonder if the Traction Control is limiting a full stall start.

True, most of the HP rating is coming from 6400 rpm but for over 90% of the rev range it is making more torque than my '90 GM 3800 at peak.

There is something about 400 hp and a 4-speed but it belongs on a trailer behind a 3.6 Heep going to the track.

I think there is something to be said about the rear end ratio with the 4.7L in the WK. What was the rear end ratio? I only test drove the WK2 v6 once in 2011 pre tranny flash (i think) and I could feel the weight. The feel of the WK2 V6, i thought, was very similar to that of a '05 WK with the 4.7L with the 3.73 rear end.

I had the 4.7L in my 05 Grand Cherokee. I now have a '12 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L V8. I recommend it.

Traded my 05 4.7 Ltd for MY 13 WK 3.6 Laredo E. Now getting 17 consistently with combined MN driving. No lift or oversized wheels just stock. Got 13 - 14 in the 4.7. I save roughly $50 a month in gas moving to the 3.6. Not much but pays for a couple Twins tickets or TWolves season tickets!

The biggest difference that made this is a no brainer is the ride quality & fit n finish of the WK2. Night and day between the platforms. The ONLY thing i miss from moving down from the Ltd to a base Laredo is the memory seats and adjustable pedals. Thats it - I DO NOT miss the V8!

Dont know where you are at with wants/needs but with used WK2 values being relatively high maybe take a look at buying a new MY 13. Great financing deals out there. Fury Motors in St Paul is being pretty aggressive with there discounts right now. They also let you take the Jeep for a spin without a salesman. Maybe look at warranties as well - 3 year 36 vs 1 year & possible added expense of extended

This is my 5th JGC started with a Laredo in 1998 then two WJ's, a WK and now the WK2. IMO this platform really is the best to date
