Smile 1st tow with the V6

I must say I am a little impressed.

I bought my 12 Laredo V6 2 1/2 weeks ago. Coming from a Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummins it is taking some getting used to driving the V6. I'm used to big torque and just a little throttle to accelerate. I would liked to gotten a Hemi but I wasn't sure how much mpg I would lose from the big diesel. I averaged 18mpg daily driving and 20-21 on the highway. Gas mileage was my main reason for the V6. I'm learning the V6 and how much throttle I need to give it to make it downshift and accelerate on demand. The first full tank on the V6 netted me 19.8 hand calculated mpg. EVIC read 21.1.

So my first tow was about as much as I plan to pull with the Jeep. My 5x10 utility trailer weighs around 650 pounds per the manufacturer and I loaded a ton of wood pellets on it. The V6 towed it pretty well. On the way to pick up the pellets I did see the ECO light some. You could tell there was some weight back there but it pulled pretty well. The trailer has a fairly tall mesh gate and it does cause more wind drag than you would think. Loaded the ECO light only came on when coasting. Its fairly flat around here but there are a few grades I had to pull. At 60-65 it downshifted to 4th gear on all but the slightest grades. Once off the highwy I shifted to fourth so it wouldnt hunt at 50 mph or so. Stopping the extra weight was no problem. Apparently the GC has pretty good brakes. I had no problem accelerating with traffic at red lights. The trans temp stayed right around 170-172F the whole time except when I stopped to grab a drink at a convenience store. It went up to 183F then came back down. maybe this trans is like other Chrysler products that dont run trans cooling in park. Thats just stupid. Coolant temps varied from 206F to 212F.

This just boosted my confidence in the Jeep a bit.

Re: 1st tow with the V6

When you said you loaded a ton of wood pellets does that mean the total weight was 2,650 pounds?

Your experience sounds similar to ours with our pop-up camper which we tow when the GC is also loaded with 4 people and 2 small dogs.

The V6 does fine but I think it would struggle with a trailer load closer to the rated 5000 lb limit.

Re: 1st tow with the V6

Yes. Total weight around 2650 pounds. I think most all vehicles struggle when towing near their max capacity. I would never buy a vehicle that I intend to tow the max. I prefer to keep my towing to around 80% of max rated capacity. Ill probably never tow over 3000 pounds with my Jeep. That's part of why I decided to trade my truck. It was more than I needed any more.

Re: 1st tow with the V6

Just after I bought my wk2 I moved from VA to MO. The total weight for both vehicle and trailer was 10450 lbs so pretty much everything was maxed out. I thought it handled the load very well as most the time I couldn't even tell I was towing anything. I have a V6 btw.

That's double the towing capacity. I wouldn't recommend that.

Correct, although I'm pretty sure I was over 5000 lbs by a little bit
