2011-2012 WK2 V6 questions (mainly towing)

I'm looking at buying my 1st Jeep, so I'm doing a bunch of research and I have some questions.

I went in to the dealership recently and test drove the 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland V6 and V8 models. I fell in love with the Jeep, and I like both platforms. I love the power of the V8 and I love the mpg that I was getting of the V6 with 18-19 city and 23-24 hwy, but I'm torn between the 2 platforms. I plan on buying a nice sized travel trailer for camping next year (maybe somewhere between 3000-4500lbs) and I want to make sure I get the best Jeep.

I plan on doing some mixed towing, light and a little bit heavier on and off, so I was looking at the V6 for the nice gas mileage. I know there are mixed reviews with the mpg and most are saying they're about the same. When I drove both platforms there was about a 3-4 mpg difference between the V6 and the V8 driving through the city. My main concern is the towing power for the V6. With a 5000lb max towing rating on the V6, I was wondering if anyone with a V6 platform was doing any slightly heavier towing of maybe 4000lbs or more and had any info on the power and performance of the Jeep under these conditions.

Being mindful that I won't be towing all the time, just maybe a couple to a few times a year (if that many), would the Hemi be overkill for me?

I went through pages and pages of forum searching, and I couldn't find the info that I was looking for.

Thanks for any help.

I'm a very happy V6 owner - but I would not tow that heavy a trailer with the V6 for more than a trivial trip. If you are sure you are going to get the camp trailer, pay the price and get the Hemi.

+2 agree with Netcoolery. In addition to that weight, you're also towing a box which will push either a moderate to a ton of air depending on its height. The Hemi model also has HD brakes and the tow kit provides better trans cooling. Safe towing isn't just about power.

Then there's a matter of terrain, where you headed for camping? Hills, altitude, slop?

I haven't really decided where I wanted to go when I do go camping, so I'm doing some searching to get some ideas.

I was thinking about just going with the Hemi, but I didn't know if I really needed it if I wasn't going to be towing all the time.

Re: 2011-2012 WK2 V6 questions (mainly towing)

This is just my opinion, so take it for what it’s worth.

First, a bigger engine does not equal less fuel economy. You can get great fuel economy with the hemi, so long as you don’t ask it to put out all 360hp all the time.

Second, I feel that for a ~5000 pound Jeep (depending on your trim level and engine choice of course) 290hp just isn’t good enough. I think that the V6 puts out the absolute minimum amount of power under normal conditions, and would under towing circumstances, be woefully inadequate.

Not to mention the above safety concerns. Trust me, go with the HEMI, you won’t regret it.

Re: 2011-2012 WK2 V6 questions (mainly towing)

No problems pulling a 2000+ lb pop-up with the V6 on hilly New England roads and I'm OK with the acceleration of the V6. I know, however, that we'd be really pushing the engine if we were to upgrade to a 4000 lb camper.

I'm a fan of the V6 but I'd also advise going with the HEMI.

All good advice so far - if you plan on towing the Hemi is the way to go.

There is however a noticeable difference in fuel economy between the two. I would say 4 mpg less with the Hemi on average... but it's well worth it.

If you have a long commute and the GC is a daily driver that 4 MPG can add up...just saying.

That was the tradeoff we made when deciding on the V6. We only tow a half-dozen times a year and our camper isn't that heavy so the gas savings was worth it.

How much are you towing?

Re: 2011-2012 WK2 V6 questions (mainly towing)

I came back from the Jeep dealership today, and I questioned the towing of the V6 and they said it's basically a rating of 5400lbs and it should be able to tow the whole thing with no problems and if something breaks, it's covered under the warranty. I would like to get the V6 since I will only be towing occasionally, but I want to make sure I have enough power and versatility as well.

Re: 2011-2012 WK2 V6 questions (mainly towing)

Don't forget you will have luggage and equipment in the camper that can quickly add another 1000lbs... If you said the camper was 2000lbs i'd get the V6 but as you are getting close to the limit fully laden, I'd be getting the Hemi. Or if your really worried about MPG wait for the CRD diesel same tow rating as hemi but heaps better on gas (even better than pentastar)

Re: 2011-2012 WK2 V6 questions (mainly towing)

I ordered the V6. I only tow occasionally. A few times a year. A double snowmobile trailer, utility trailer, 18' foot boat, and popup camper... it tows it no problem. I tested it out on my friends before I ordered mine.
