Dude, you're going to run into opposing views every once in a while. Even though this forum exists to bring together those of a like mind, we are individuals with different tastes. As much as I can't stand the WK2, I allow that you and others do. Until I get back and get into a Jeep of my own, I try to limit my posts to b.s.'ing with my friends in the "say anything" thread, but I can, and will exercise my right to post my feelings about something, until the powers that run this place stop me from doing so.
I have to say that while I completely disagree with you about the look of the WK2 (I love it) I agree about opposing views, especially on matters of taste.

When someone posts (like you did) that they don't like the WK2 styling, I just take it as a reality check that we're not all sycophants here. Tastes do vary ... I mean ... people used to even buy the AMC Gremlin!

Besides, when it comes to differing opinions you can probably get people to argue about motherhood and apple pie!

Come to think of it ... I like cherry pie better anyway.

I'm partial to cherry myself, but any pie is better than none. In Korea and Thailand, they are fond of pineapple pie. I have to say, it's quite good.

I'm going to have to disagree with those who hate the new JGC. I truly believe Chrysler has made the right choice and manufactured a vehicle that appeals to a wide range of buyers, me included. I traded in my BMW 330ci convertible for a V6 Summit, mineral gray, saddle/black interior. I love it!

I took my time looking around for the right SUV. This is what I test drove with similar features, and I ended up coming back to the WK2.

1. 2011 Toureg. Enjoyed driving it, but it was 53K and reliability and reviews were horrible

2. 2011 Ford Explorer Limited (MSRP 45k). Loved driving it and the looks are love or hate. I liked it alot, but not a fan of SYNC and how busy the dash is.

3. 2011 Volvo XC90. Expensive, and boring to drive.

4. 2011 Chevy Tahoe LTZ. Beautiful and roomy SUV, but it needs the 6.2L that's in the Escalade. Too underpowered for me.

5. Land Rover LR4. Lots of cargo room. Loved the new jaguar V8 and do I have to mention off-road capabilities? Also it has the adjustable suspension. Reliability has been an issue though. My wife hated it because it "looks like a Box on wheels." I liked it. 55K

6. Q5 (3.2L V6), loved it but too small. 50K

7. X3 (x35i technology, convenience, upgraded wheels). Still not in love with the looks even with the new mods. A bit too small for me. You cant go wrong with that twin turbo in-line 6 though. 52K

8. X5 (x35i Sport Activity, technology, convenience package, running boards, sat radio, adaptive cruise control 63K) Loved this one, so did the wife, but 63K... one of my favorites!

9. 2011 MDX (navigation package 52K) I'm buying an SUV, not a space ship, lol. Too many buttons and I still can't stomach the new nose. Reminds me of a Saturn grille. Give credit where credit is due: great and reliable vehicle! You can't go wrong with ACURA.

10. 2011 JGC Overland Summit V6. Had the most features of all if the vehicles I test drove. The X5 with the works is running about 70k. I was amazed how solid it drove.

If I had an extra 10-20k laying around, I would have gone for the X5 or the Cayenne S which I did not test drive because it would be sitting in my garage right now.

Bottom line is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally feel that this is one of the best looking SUV's on the road today, and for the money, you get the elegance and features of much more expensive ones.

Re: 2011 GC Too Typical?

^ What JC said. All descriptions I essentially agree with.
At the beginning of the trail, there are only two vehicles on that list that can really go OR: the Jeep and the Rover. We get WAY more toy for the money with the WK2. AND it looks great! Truly looks better in person than in any picture.
AND its actually quieter than a $90,000 Land Rover. All in all, the WK2 is sturdy, elegant, comfortable, and fun. And the smart choice in the category for now.
Where's the smiley for patting oneself on the back?

Call me crazy, but in my youth, never in a million years would I think the same people that drive Audis and BMWs would EVER consider driving a Jeep. Maybe what I'm seeing is a disturbing trend discarding individuality and leading to this eventuality, that somewhere in the near future, all man will have in a choice of vehicles is some egg-shaped, silver SUV-ish crossover vehicle that cost too much and doesn't offer enough.

...but eh. Whatever. Maybe I'm over-thinking it.

I like the Boxy Land Rover Design. Maybe that's why I liked the Commander so much. I'd be OK with this blend of ruggedness and sophistication if it went into a platform like that. Sure it shares a boxy profile with the Rover and a few others, but "few" being the operative word. The WK2 looks like an egg, like 90% of it's market share sister vehicles.

Let me start off by saying that I am an AUTO ENTHUSIAST, not one of "the same people that drive Audis and BMWs." I drive a car because, simply, I enjoy to drive it. When the first generation X3 came out, I test drove it and was horrified. The interior was cheesy and it was just ugly to look at.

I compare this discussion to when a little metal band that had a cult following called Metallica "SOLD OUT" their loyal fans by putting out an album that appealed to the masses. The look was still them, the sound was definitely still them, but they added something that sold records...They evolved with the times to stay alive. It was probably the biggest marketing move in their history which carried them though 3 decades. Were a few people pissed off? yes.

At the end of the day, it's about keeping the doors open and selling cars. What you are seeing is an AMERICAN auto maker competing in today's market, and people are responding positively to it.

Look at FORD, for instance. They are redesigning their vehicles to compete and they are very successful. Sell out to loyal FORD owners, I don't think so. You can't find a new explorer on the lot these days...

I'm sure Chrysler did a study and the JGC is the platform that would have benefited from an elegant makeover. It's about dollars and cents. I think it was a very smart move. I have always liked the JGC and have test driven many, but like a lot of U.S. auto makers, I was never impressed with the interiors and ergonomics.

All I have to say is that they earned my business, and yes you are seeing it; AUDI and BMW folks are buying a Jeep!

Cheers!

...I do love the LR4, by the way.

Sure.. The WK2 looks like most other aerodynamic SUV's (that's the problem with making a fuel efficient aerodynamic vehicle -- they will all eventually look the same to maximize efficiency)....

But those other SUV's can't go up the side of a mountain. :-D

The WK2 is all Jeep underneath the pretty exterior. I proved that last week in the North Georgia mountains. It can do everything my 2002 Wrangler could do -- except clear some high rocks, since the Wrangler had a 5" Superlift and 36" tires.
