2011 GC Too Typical?

Am I the only one that thinks the new 2011 GC just looks like another run of the mill SUV? OK the interiror is very good, but you would expect that in new cars.

But the outside looks like just another SUV. With the exception of the grill, you would be hard pressed to tell if that were a GC.

The current model is what Jeeps are all about, big, manly, American. stands out, still demands respect and is still classed as a middle class vehicle. Espcially here in the UK where it costs almost £8 a gallon.

What do you guys think?

I agree, the design seems to follow the current SUV trend which in all honesty I don't like. The WK2 essentially looks like a Dodge Journey with the front nose redesigned. I don't like .

X2 I'm not a fan of the exterior either. Completely agree. It seems to be losing its 'Jeepness' IMO.

Re: 2011 GC Too Typical?

That's my problem with it. They took too much "Jeep" out of it, especially the back. I'm hoping I get used to it.

Re: 2011 GC Too Typical?

Well, Chrysler/Jeep/Fiat is going to build whatever the market is trending to. They aren't in business to please a small group of enthusiasts. Imagine if Ford was still making the Model-T (well, maybe that's a bad example ), but you get my point. With a new year comes new taste and ideas; evolution. I for one never thought the Grand Cherokee looked any more unique than any other SUV in its class.

At the end of the day these car manufacturers (especially now more than ever) are going to make whatever has the potential to net them the most cash. Take a look at Porsche... they used to produce solely a flagship track car, the 911, now they have SUV's, sedans, low-priced coupes, and I'm sure more to come. It's just the nature of the business. If you want Jeep to make SUV's that are 'unique' (i.e. probably going to lose sales), then you'd better expect to pay a premium for them, because they are losing money by not making what the general market demands.

(BTW, I really like the new design - and think all you premature haters will too after you see a few )

Dodge Journey:

Don't get me wrong Im sure the features will be great but the looks is lacking unless I see one in person.

Hell no you're not alone. I thought I was. I voiced a similar opinion to yours and got a smackdown for it.

They all look the same. Might as well buy a Hyundai Santa Fe< the statement that inflamed the band-wagoners...

It would take a LOT to make the new style grow on me. For the price of a WK2, there are probably 30 or more cars I'd rather drive.

Don't agree with you. The JGC has always appealed to people who wanted something different, that looked something different but still came somewhat cheaper than the competition. All the previous Jeeps looked like Jeeps, you didn’t even have to be a car or Jeep fanatic to notice that it’s a Jeep in front, behind or to the side of you. Example given, my ex who has more T n A than anything else goes, wow you have a Jeep from 100 feet away.

This new one, people will look, go, oh its just another car.

And yes the car manufactures care about the bottom line\dollar, so they will make anything that makes them think about money, but it doesn’t always work out, for example, the Ford Cougar, Fords attempt at a replacement for the Capri, it failed, or Fords attempt at the replacement for the Granada, this failed and production was ceased, because both cars were aimed at the masses, and the bottom line. It did not get them anywhere apart from almost going bankrupt. (btw not a ford hater).

Cars are about style, if a car looks good people will buy it. This Jeep looks more like a crossover than anything else.

But hey that’s my opinion.

This is a debate of opinion. There are no facts to support whether it is/was a unique vehicle or wasn't. Strictly a subjective viewpoint.

Yeah, but when they did all of their financial breakdowns and analysis and cost-benefits, the Cougar looked like a money maker. That's what companies go on; analysis, numbers, etc.... not what some small collection of enthusiasts think.

Totally agree.
And this mainstream model of the GC could very likely be the downfall of the GC per se. As it's aimed at a public that wants a.....SUV. Where as people who have bought a GC have done so to get a GC and not just any SUV.
The GC look have been key to it's mass production and world wide popularity.

I don't hate the WK2, but I think they could have done a better job. Lots of the interior also looks to come from old mercs.
But I won't talk too much since I'll prolly end up getting a WK2 SRT in a few years

Yeah, i really wanted the new ones to just be the wk with rectangular headlights similar to the wj or zj. The rounds just didn't ever look right to me. Too liberty-ish.
