Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

Marlin prefers Low range, while I prefer to stay in normal high range. (I busted a transfer case on my 2006 WK because I was a bit hard on it in soft sand using low range. My own stupidity, not the Jeeps fault)
I ONLY use low range IF I get stuck in soft sand, otherwise high range all the time. Works well.

So IMHO I think High range is more than capable for serious sand driving, but low range is a nice to have every now and then to get you out of that sticky situation, but mine is QDII. Don't have any experience with QT.

If I find the thread, I'll post a link to it. Definitely interesting to read...
Any luck finding that thread?

I looked, but couldn't find it. I think it might have been a thread in the Jeep Commander forums. I was a quite a while ago, so it's probably buried.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

Boston snow has been no problem with quad 1 even in muddy, rutted, "off road" alley (where neighbors are stuck). Will try it in Chappy sand in a few weeks. Loving the remote start from apartment window and entering a warm ready to go jeep.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

I have run in sand for many years and have always preferred to run in low range on my jeeps. The primary reason is that low range locks front and rear axles and does not require the transfer case to work moving torque back and forth between axles. The interesting thing is that for a given speed on sand, I see the same engine RPM regardless of whether I am in low or high range. The only restriction on low range is the speed limit of 25 MPH.

try it out, just don't go alone ;-). In my opinion you should be ok with qt1, but its hard to say anything without knowing the area. But with low pressure and carful driving...

Great advice. Just make sure you have a recovery point and remember to air down.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

If it makes you feel better, on a trip to the outer banks with some friends we were driving on the beaches and had no problems with a trailblazer ss (awd) and I saw plenty of subarus cruising around.... the absolute key is airing down the tires and keeping up momentum

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

Where I plan on going, I air down to 14 lbs. Most of the sand is hard packed, but some is soft. In the past using real 4x4s I have at times used low, which of course, I don't have now. But I do have that cool sunroof to gaze out of if I get stuck. Thanks for the advice.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

I have been driving Jeeps on Nauset Beach for years, as well as on Nantucket and the Vineyard. I haven't tried my QT1 WK yet since I have an older Jeep to get sandy, but I never have needed low range on the beach with my XJ or KJ. Just remember to turn off your ESP. I can't imagine you'll have any trouble, but post your experience when you get out there.

Make sure you have safe tow points front and rear and a good strap and shovel, but I'm sure you know that. There is always someone around to pull you out in the rare situation you need it. I also carry large rubber traction mats like the kind used in commercial kitchens and behind bars and have extracted myself a couple of times with those. They sit in the cargo area and make a great no slip surface for cargo.
