2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

Just bought a 2011 GC with the Quadra-Trac 1 (and the panoramic sunroof). I wanted that sun roof but I am concerned that my 4X4 is not adequate for sand. I fish places where I can only go with 4x4. Advice? Thanks.

Welcome to the Garage! In my opinion the lack of low range in sand isn't a minus its a plus. The less gear reduction the less chance of burying yourself pulling out. When I had my GC in the sand in Fla. the last thing I wanted is low range. Sounds like you've been running sand for a while so drive it like your other 4x4s and I think you'll be fine.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

Extended driving in sand may become an issue. I read a thread where a QTI guy when wheelin' with a bunch of QTII and QDII guys in the sand dunes and he ended up having to stop because of overheating issues. It seems that because he didn't have low gearing, he overworked his vehicle trying to keep up with the pack climbing the hills.

If I find the thread, I'll post a link to it. Definitely interesting to read...

The torque multiplication of a Low Range option is a Definate plus in heavy sand going.

I frequent the sand, and using low range (not to 'crawl", but to multiply torque) is much easier on the Jeep.

What type of sand do you plan to drive in? If you are not talking about the dunes of dubai then QTI will be just fine. The key to driving in sand is lowering your tire pressure to 15-20PSI

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Quadra-trac 1 offroad?

I need to drive the packed but sometimes very soft sand on Chappiquidick. I've owned an 88 Cherokee and a 98 Pathfinder and did at times need the low gear. I reduce tire pressure to 15psi. Seems most people think I'll be OK since i don't plan on moving faster than 15mph. I have the 26X package and the 18 inch wheels do fine in the snow we've had in Boston. I spend way to much time thinking about the beach and fishing so I've been wondering about if I need to avoid the soft sand entirely. Maybe I'll find out next month. Thanks for all your responses.
