Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

The 2011 Ford Explorer hit my local dealership lots today, so I took one for a test drive. I thought I would share my impressions and humble opinions. Take them for what they are worth. Just to give you some idea of my perspective as a car buyer, I currently drive a 2006 Acura MDX Touring and will likely soon trade it in for a 2011 Laredo X. I drove a silver '11 Explorer XLT with black leather interior. Here goes.
Exterior: Ford completely redesigned the Explorer for 2011. The exterior is fairly attractive. It is sleeker and more aggressive than its boxier predecessor, which represents a big improvement in fit and finish. Just like Jeep, Ford has apparently been taking notes on European design.
Interior: The interior is very characteristic of a Ford vehicle; nice and pleasant but simple, with an efficient allocation of buttons and controls. The leather seats are comfortable and of decent, yet not remarkable quality. I do recall thinking that the leather upholstery in new Explorer seems to be of higher quality than what Ford puts in the Edge. The center console is accessible, well organized and useful. The entertainment system and in-drive controls (SYNC) are excellent, and the sound was good (XLT does not have Sony, so the Limited is likely even better). I did feel that the Explorer had average to below average rear visibility.

Drive: The drive was soft and smoother than average for an SUV, but not sporty and it just feels big. The turning radius was decent and braking seemed solid. Unfortunately, the 6 cylinder was sluggish in acceleration. Generally speaking, the drive was comfortable but not exciting.

Overall: I thought the Explorer was a nice SUV but, while I can say that I liked it, it certainly did not blow me away. Leather, Navigation and Moonroof are all options in the XLT (standard on the Limited, I believe). For me, personally, that means the XLT, when priced with my desired options, might price itself out of my range. Shortly after leaving the Ford dealership, I went to a Jeep dealership and drove a 2011 Laredo X (for the 3rd or 4th time) while the 2011 Explorer test drive was fresh in my mind. For me, the WK2 has a distinct advantage over the Explorer in every aspect except the entertainment system. However, the disparity was not great enough to affect my buying decision. My decisive nod goes to the WK2. It's more attractive inside and out, has less redundant size and space, and the drive and 4x4 capability is superior. I'm not even sure if its a fair comparison, as the Explorer seems like more of a family vehicle and the WK2 seems like more of an SUV.

Hope this review holds some value for you. If nothing else, I get to see my words in print...
Happy New Year.

^glad you've been in the WK2 several times now SUVfan, and had your own first-hand competitor comparisons. at the end of the day, this vehicle speaks for itself - loudly and proudly.

Better color for the WK2 - Charcoal or Mineral Gray? Can't choose.

I think the light gray is just that.... bla gray with no where near enough life to even earn a spot in the line up.

The charchoal looks black in the shade but looks f'n fantastic in the sun. I wish I was just a bit lighter but if I had to pick it would be charcoal over gray by a land slide.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

I had the same situation I had to determine between my two top picks mineral gray or dark charcoal. After seeing user Nbtstatic's dark charcoal pics I was instantly sold. I like mineral gray but it was just too light. I cannot wait for my dark charcoal Overland to arrive.

As for the HID's the very sharp horizontal cutoff is one of the things I love about them. Im not sure why cherodude was having sign lighting issues and side illumination problems as thats where a high quality HID projector shines the most. The light output is soooo wide compared to any halogen equipped car I have ever owned. Also, the reason the horizontal cutoff is sloped or stepped to the right is to do exactly what you said yours didnt do, light up signs. Im not doubting you by any means but I am surprised.
My previous car was a 2007 Acura TL Type S which had bi-xenon HID's. They were unbelievable!! Cant wait to compare them to my new Overland when that comes in.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

I could also stand the charcoal to be just a touch lighter, but I would still (obviously, since I did), choose it over the mineral.

I have had more silver vehicles than any other color too, and it was my first choice going into this process. But after seeing these Jeeps in person, it became clear that they wore the darker colors better, IMHO.

One other thing I'll say about charcoal is, it matches the plastic body moldings perfectly, so if you like that look, it's as close as you can get to having painted molding from the factory.

Of course, this is a very personal decision, and there is no right or wrong of course, so just enjoy whatever you end up with.
