As a 4Runner enthusiast, I have to ask why you chose a 2000 model. Don't get me wrong, the 3rd generation 4Runners were excellent vehicles, but the 4th gen has a much stronger V6 engine (or an even more powerful V8 available) and much more interior room and ride comfort. Did you get a great deal on the 2000 or did you personally know the seller?

BTW, as much as I love my 4Runner, I can't get past the looks of the 5th generation. I just really think they messed up the styling. So even if it proves to be as rock-solid as prior generations of 4Runners, I can't bring myself to buy one until they change the styling again.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

First year issuses may seem to be a valid claim, but then these r just opinions of other fellow jeep owners .and if u every saw larry flints movie played by woody harrison there is a classic line in there about opinions,so take this with a grain of salt. look if you like what u see and r comfortable with the service the dealer ship could provide then go for it. but if easily swayed be opinons then dont do it ,,,,,,,this is my 3rd jeep 79 cj ,98 zj ,11 wk2 4121miles, and loving it still have the zj 121000 pat just fact!!!!!!!!!

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

My oil service notice appeared just before Xmas at about 6,000km. I wasn't too surprised but then yesterday I noticed that oil has been dripping from the engine bay area for some time. I didn't expect this and didn't noticed it due to snow.

Also on Xmas day my visor on the driver's side broke off on the hindged side. It's hanging on because of electrical wires.

Took it in and they had to order the visor part (3 business days) and hopefully by Friday I'll go back to fix both the oil loss and visor.

I'll update later this week.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

Seriously, we have NO idea how good reliability on WK2 would be unless 2-3 years are passed. It applies the same for many different vehicles (new ones esp all-new types) so there is a certain risk for any customer to buy an all-new WK2.

I would still purchase an all-new vehicle like a WK2 and hope for its good yet better reliability in the long run, anyway.

For anyone who depends or values on reliability more, I would advise this person to buy an pre-2008 vehicles since they do have reliability records available already by now. I don't mean to put this thread down by the way.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

Too bad TrueDelta isn't tied into the GC as it is with many other models. Its data, tho limited, is dependable, yet timely.

Even better is Consumer Reports detailed reader feedback compilations, but we won't see that for the 2011 GC until ten months or so from now. Not quite a two-year wait, but close, and you'd think by now they would have a more real-time setup using online feedback.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

The guy who runs True Delta totally relies on owners posting data to his site. He registers on all kinds of forums and asks for people to participate. In return, he allows them permanent free access to his site. The people who own WK2s should register and start giving him data.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - reliability

You all express valid points. Each one is personal perference. I have owned Chrysler products starting in the 70s. Changed it up a bit, switching to several other manufactures, domestic and foreign. The recent purchase of my 2011 GC Overland 4x4 Hemi, is my 5th GC Jeep, beginning in 1998. On average I hold on to them for 3 years. Every model year has been continuous improvement on the preceding. However, Chrysler/Fiat has made quantum leaps with the 2011. IMO, I do not have any reservations to buy a re-design, next generation model. Frankly, thye 2011 GC is under priced, under valued (IMO), when compared to the likes' of Audi, Benz, BMW, Porsche, Acura, Cadallic, Range Rover.

I know he needs a minimum number of participants before he can generate data. Maybe he doesn't have enough WK owners participating...

Wow, looks really clean for its age, inside and out. And you did get a great deal at that price. Are you planning to sell it when you get your 5th gen (or WK2)? I'm sure you'd have plenty of interest on the 4Runner forums. Does it have the optional rear diff lock?

One thing that bums me out on the 5th Gen 4Runner is the SR5 lost the full time 4wd option. The 4th Gen had a locking/unlocking center Torsen diff alowing full time 4wd. Now, you need to get a LTD to have that. With the hideous 20" wheels and $42K price that is no option for me. Lol. I like WK2s 4wd offering.
Yes, that was a major disappointment for me as well. I have a 4th gen with the lockable Torsen center differential. So I usually just run 4wd all winter long, regardless of the road conditions. It's great not to even have to think about traction when you're driving on roads that are only partly snow/ice covered. Toyota really dropped the ball when they went back to a regular transfer case and no center differential on the 5th gen, unless you are willing to pay for the Limited model.

That's exactly the reason why I'm following the WK2 on this forum. I'm not buying a new SUV any time soon, but at least I'll know what I'm getting myself into if I do decide to buy a WK2 in a year or so....
