Of course you would expect the members of a Jeep enthusiasts forum to take umbrage at this, but by any objective standard, this is a travesty.

Oh wait, the picks were made by journalists. That explains it. I'm going to email Dan Neil (WSJ auto critic and my favorite from this crowd) to see if he was party to this.

Oh well, we know the truth. The next time I see a new Explorer at a stoplight, the Hemi will exact its revenge.

DETROIT — The Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric car, the centerpiece of General Motors’ comeback, was named 2011 North American Car of the Year at the Detroit auto show Monday.
The Volt, which already won the 2011 Green Car of the Year and Motor Trend Magazine's Car of the Year, edged out the Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Sonata to win the award.
Ford Motor Co's latest incarnation of its Explorer sport utility vehicle was named 2011 Truck of the Year, edging out the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango.
It was the third year in a row that Ford claimed the truck award.
Forty-nine auto journalists from the U.S. and Canada made the picks. The vehicles are judged on innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value.

Yeswith the mirrors, but then apples to apples needs to be compared. Edmunds has The GC / Explorer / Acadia all somwhere in the 70" widths.

So when you see 90" for an explorer and 79 (or whatever for an Acadia) then it throws you off. The Explorder isn't a foot wider.

I like the Edmunds version that gives the width without the mirrors, I just wanted to make sure that the dimensions of each vehicle should be compared in the same manner (one that matters more than just super-wide mirrors, although it does matter for garage entry, etc)

For example, The Jeep has tall and narrowish mirrors. Is the body of the Jeep (which is what counts for interiror space, etc) really 6 inches slimmer than the Explorer? No . 78.9 to 76.3.

So it seems like the Explorer body is about 2.6" wider. That's all I was tryign to get at

I saw this as one possible explanation
Why such a blowout for the Volt and Explorer? It's likely on the truck side, that the two strong Chrysler SUVs simply split votes. Both the Grand Cherokee and the Durango have earned strong reviews: High Gear Media's editors have given particular praise to the off-road capability of the Jeep and the Dodge. That the vehicles were completed during Chrysler's bankruptcy makes them all the more impressive an achievement.

So the 2011 Dodge Durango = Ross Perot?

Not if the Jeep's number are accurate. You'll tie the V6 boat.

"The new Explorer is fast off the line. It does 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds"

I see what you're saying but that doesn't make my numbers "incorrect" - as you stated before. I also used the OVERALL width for the Jeep so I think I compared apples to apples.

Correct, you were not incorrect, It just made me jump when I saw 90" knowing our Acadia is in the high 70s and going WTF?? I knew the Explorer was not 90" inches wide (didn't even think of mirrors), so I jumped the gun on my original response. My apologies. It's tough when different manufacturers/sites use different methods to measure common items. The GMC site does not use mirrors in their measurements, while obviously Jeep/Ford do.

Ultimately I couldn't stand the explorer after driving it, no matter how wide or narrow it or its mirrors are
