Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee WK2 Reviews

Consumer Reports finally put out its full report on the WK2.

Alas, they don't recommend it because of poor emergency handling:
Quote:
We found its emergency handling to be disconcerting when it hopped and skittered sideways in our avoidance maneuver. That handling characteristic and so-so acceleration put the Grand Cherokee's score behind better models in the category. Reliability remains to be seen, but we couldn't recommend the GC until its on-limit handling improves.

This content is for subscribers only. What are other SUVs with good emergency handling?

Name whichever model you're interested in and I'll check it out. The existing Explorer generally gets an "average."

If it's not a hassle:

Toyota Highlander
Toyota RAV4
Ford Edge
Mazda CX-9

How did they judge Wk2 other then this issue?

I'm about to close down for the evening (may check in later), but here are the answers:
WK2: poor
Highlander: average
RAV4: V6 average, 4-banger good
Edge: average
CX-9: average
LR4: fair
LR2: poor

Lots of 2011 models, including the Explorer, are still being tested, so no data are as yet available.

Bottom line for the WK2 (note the tranny comment):
Highs: Ride, quietness, transmission, IIHS crash-test results. Lows: Acceleration, at-the-limit handling, complicated touch-screen radio controls

Their highest-rated SUV overall gets an 86, the lowest a 17, while the WK2 gets a 66. Doubtless Jeep engineers will get scrambling to address the emergency-handling issue, because CR has a huge impact on sales and reputation. Let's hope they don't do it quick and dirty by just having the ESC kick in earlier.

Isn't it strange that Rav4 4-cyl rated better that 6-cyl? I don't really understand how smaller number of cylinders is better for this test.

As for your comment about addressing the issue - I really don't know if this can be alleviated without significant redesign of some mechanical components.

OK, I just found this (available for free):

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/car...fety-risk.html

and this:

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/car...buy-label.html

Software update for Lexus seems to make heck of difference. I have to say though that I would never drive SUV like this.

Presumably a slightly lower center of gravity from the different engine and transmission. Lighter engine could impact understeer, too.

Some other WK2 Laredo test results:
0-30 3.7, 0-60 9.1
Routine handling: good
Avoidance maneuver, max speed: 48.5
Braking: good (60-0 dry 139', wet 157')
Headlights (halogen): good
CR overall mileage 18, CU city/hwy 12/25
Cruising range: 505 mi
Ride, noise, driving position, seat comfort: all good
Fit/finish: good
Climate system: excellent

The avoidance speed seems to be about fair by SUV/CUV standards. The poor emergency rating obviously doesn't stem from this, but rather from how it handles at breakaway.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee WK2 Reviews

Which trim/suspension system did they test? I would think there is a difference if you are at Sport height with QL, and if there are skid plates on the bottom or not.
