Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee WK2 Reviews

Tested model: 2011 Laredo 4-door SUV 4WD, 3.6-liter V6, 5-speed automatic with Quadra Drive I

"In several runs, it tended to slide and hop sideways, limiting its speed through the avoidance maneuver and sapping drivers' confidence despite the standard ESC. We are testing a V8 version to see whether or not it demonstrates the same trait."

Still, a typical garbage review from CR. They've been losing influence for years.

IMO CR reports are far from garbage. However, they are obviously targeted to families and tend to view vehicles primarily as safe daily-use appliances, with relatively little interest in the sporting enjoyment of driving. For starters, nothing in the WK2 tests applies to offroad use or even the ability to handle piles of snow or deep mud. Ironically, their free daily blog is somewhat better in this regard.

The gap between Consumer Reports recomendations and reality has gotten very bad in the last ten years or so, particularly regarding reliability. The WK2 was also extensively tested and reviewed by numerous other sources who found no issue with handling.

I have to question their methodology on this. If you're throwing a 5000 pound vehicle around at speed, the lateral forces are going to be huge. I would think even with large tires you're going to lose lateral traction. Under these "emergency" manuevers you're either going to:

A: Roll over
B: Lose traction at the front or rear first causing a loss of control or spin out.
C: Slide slightly, but evenly to the side, maintaining forward orientation and control.

I'm sure ESC plays a part in keeping the Jeep from doing A or B, and since you can't defy physics, some lateral sliding would seem inevitable. Under those circumstance C would be the best option.

We'll see. If CU is off the mark, Chrysler will be all over them like bees.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee WK2 Reviews

Presumably almost everybody's already seen this? Seems like quite a putdown, but in reading all of Motor Trend's pages of SUV evaluations for SUOTY, it seems like they have some mighty peculiar criteria for judging excellence.

Edit: link fixed.
