2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit vs. Range Rover Sport

Saw this article...granted it wasn't a neutral author but interesting read nonetheless.

"Vehicle Comparison: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit vs. Range Rover Sport
2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit conquers elements, pretentious luxury.

The 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland Summit 4x4 is the class of Jeep’s full-size SUV lineup, but can it compete with the jewel of one of the world’s most prestigious luxury automakers? Has there ever been a mountain Jeep wasn’t eager to conquer?

At the top of the Grand Cherokee pecking order is the Overland Summit 4x4, otherwise known as the quintessential conqueror. Jeep’s redesigned flagship blends legendary Trail Rated capability with a level of design, luxury and refinement more often reserved for the markedly more expensive import market.

And there are few more expensive imports than the 2011 Range Rover Sport. In fact, the newest Rover carries a starting MSRP of $59,645 (for the base model HSE trim), a staggering $13,650 higher than that of Jeep’s top model Overland ($45,995). Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee comes backed by a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, while Range Rover covers a decidedly less inspiring four-years/50,000-miles.

The only logical conclusion is that the base model Range Rover Sport offers over $13,000 more luxury, refinement and performance than the very best Jeep has to offer.

Interestingly, you won’t account for it outside, where both vehicles take very different, but equally sophisticated approaches to exterior design. The Grand Cherokee gets an aggressive, modern redesign for 2011, along with an imposing chrome grille, daytime running lights, 20-inch wheels, roof rails, a power liftgate and first and second row sunroofs. With its taller greenhouse and boxier frame, the Ranger Rover Sport HSE gets precisely none of those features.

Under the hood, the Sport tries to make up some ground; Range Rovers come with a 375 hp, 5.0-liter V8 engine, which just edges out the Summit’s available 360 hp 5.7-liter V8. But what the Grand Cherokee lacks in horsepower, it makes up for in innovative capability. The newest Overland Summit gets Jeep’s Quadra-Lift™ air suspension system, which allows the driver to manipulate ride height with the turn of a knob, essentially ensuring a ride height of up to 10.7 inches (more than an inch higher than that of the Rover). Summits equipped with the V8 engine also see Jeep’s advanced Quadra-Drive II Four-Wheel Drive system, which anticipates and adjusts to low traction automatically, and delivers superior capability and confidence on even the toughest terrain.

Inside, the Range Rover Sport stakes its reputation on luxurious amenities and superior craftsmanship, but it’s the 2011 Grand Cherokee that gets two rows of heated, specially-embroidered Nappa ventilated leather seats with perforated inserts, a genuine wood and leather steering wheel and elegant wood trim (in fairness, the Rover does get real wood veneers). Longer and wider than the Sport, the Summit makes the most of its size advantage, and sees more front headroom, and rear passenger head, leg and shoulder space. With rear seats folded down, it also sees up to 68.7 cubic feet of cargo space, enough to haul pretty much anything, like, say, an extra $13,650.

Both models get premium audio and touch-screen navigation systems, but the newest Grand Cherokee comes standard with Jeep’s comprehensive Uconnect™ system, which integrates voice-control over Garmin GPS Navigation with real-time traffic, a hands-free phone system and a 30GB hard drive designed to store and play up to 4,250 songs through a nine-speaker, 506-watt stereo. Also available on the Summit is a rear seat DVD entertainment system.

In the past, Jeep has always been something of a loner in the automotive world. Instead of competing with other automakers over trifling issues like fabric and cupholders, it was as if they set their sights on loftier targets, like nature and the elements. But in the last few years, the unquestioned leader in off-road capability has left its cabin in the woods and begun building vehicles as adept at tackling the pavement as they are at ruling the path.

Nowhere is this duality better served than with their latest achievement, the redesigned 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a vehicle so advanced and luxurious that it can not only stand toe-to-toe with one of the world’s premier luxury SUVs, it can beat it at its own game for $13,650 less."

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit vs. Range Rover Sport

Not just non-neutral, that dealership ad is dishonest:
Quote:
the Grand Cherokee comes backed by a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, while Range Rover covers a decidedly less inspiring four-years/50,000-miles.
The Range Rover's 4/50 warranty is for the entire car. The correct comparison is with the GC's 3/36 bumper-to-bumper warranty, not the powertrain warranty.

I prefer the Range, but I can't afford one. However, the WK2 is indeed one hell of an SUV for the $$$.

I agree, you can't really compare the grand Cherokee to a range rover there on two totally different planets. But that hasnt stopped me from placing an order for the grand.

I hear that Ranges are fragile. Heard it from owners and enthusiasts.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit vs. Range Rover Sport

^Well said above.

I was prepared to drop the coin on the Rover, but there wasn't any good reason to do so other than snob appeal. Just sayin.

I meant wheels (corrected). I'm not into offroad and only offroaders know the diameter of their tires
