This is unfortunate, like Russ1331 I would prefer the V6 for fuel economy but would also like a higher tow rating when pulling my boat. You would think the limiting factor would not be the engine @290HP, even the Pilot tows 4,500 lbs. with just 250HP.

This leaves me with no other option than to get the Hemi, which isn't so bad I guess . Fortunately my commute to work is not 20 miles like Russ1331's (more like just 15 round trip) so it's not too big a deal for me. Plus the extra HP and reserve towing capacity would be nice to have...just hope gas prices don't spike up to something like $5/gallon anytime soon; then I would regret it.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Production

Yup exactly, Just does not make sense for them to rate it as 3500lb with an engine that strong. Maybe the transmission?

Maybe Milous has some details on that? The same towing capacity even with increase in hp.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Production

the point I was making is the 3.7 and 6.1 wk's are rated the same...and because if the hitch. But current 3.7 aND 6.1 owners tow ALOT more than 3500. I dont see why a more powerful 3.6 couldnt as well with a bettter rated hitch?

Maybe it could, but I wouldn't want to exceed the rating spec and then have a warranty problem.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Production

Sometimes it's a potential cooling issue or the engine's ECM tweaked a little too much for serious towing.

Yeah, you're probably right, but it may depend on what type of problem develops. If it's both unusual and expensive, like replacing an engine or a transmission, you can count on Chrysler wanting to investigate to pinpoint exactly what caused the failure.

But why take a chance, unless you have good reason to believe the manufacturer's published towing rating is less than you believe it "should" be? Do you think you know more about the vehicle's capabilities than the company who makes it? If you plan on keeping the vehicle past the warranty period, do you want to put extra strain on all of the components, knowing that something might break down prematurely after the warranty is up? And warranty issues aside, would you feel comfortable exceeding the limit from a safety perspective? Most experienced boaters recommend to allow a healthy margin by NOT pushing the rated limit, let alone purposely exceeding it!

I figure that if I'm going to spend $40K+ I might as well spend a little more and not have to worry about it.

They rate the tow rating low on the 3.6 because they want you to drop more money on the 5.7 thats all. Ask around see what other even older 3.7 V6s with the same tow rating are pulling and i bet you its way more than the rated amount. And you really think they can prove without a doubt that you were towing more than rated amount without you telling them? This isnt CSI for Jeeps bro c'mon now.

Yeah, I'm sure this is true, it's a devious plot meant to fool us naive consumers.

Wouldn't surprise me, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Again, why put yourself into that position when you have another option?
