Re: 2011 Limited roof rack low-profile cross rail

I was concerned about the max crossbar spacing as well. I took a tape measure to the dealer the other day and the side rails will allow for a max crossbar spacing of 30 inches.

30 inches? Are you sure about that? That's not even 3 feet!

I just went out to the garage and measured the factory rack on my 4Runner. It will allow 48 inches of separation for the cross bars. I guess Jeep doesn't think people will actually use the new Grand Cherokee's roof rack for much of anything.

Yes, 30" is correct. but the cross bars on my 2001 GC are positioned at only 28" apart and it has worked great for my 76" long Thule box. So, 30" crossbar spacing on the 2011 GC should be okay for most uses.

Well, considering that my kayak is 175" long (about 14.5 feet), 30" of crossbar spacing probably won't cut it. At the very least, I'd be forced to use a bow & stern tie down even for a short trip.

Yes, It's been some time for me, 25k on my JGC, all good, no problems. Ok, after a year of waiting for Yakima to come up with a tower solution, they came out with the Rail Grab system. I just mounted a set today and will send photos soon. They seem very secure and really do have a grip on the factory rails. They run about $165.00 for a set of four.

yakima rail grab

Just saddled up my Yakima roof rack... love the look! Took all of 20 minutes to install with the low clamps. drove down the road at 50mph and did notice some extra noise. The noise was not very bad at all and tolerable at 50mph. Ill hit the interstate soon and give another ride report.
I installed the front 1"5/8 from the front of the rail and 32" in-between the two rails...
