Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

Is there a possibility of posting a comparison chart with the features of both Garmin and Harmon so we could see what the 730N lacks in the nav format?

Oh man, this is REALLY bad news for me. As I had posted before, RHR was the only reason I was holding off on ordering my Overland. So what am I to do now, just get it with the 430N? I wanna cry.

If you want the 430N over the 730N RHR, I'd get on the stick- before too long I figure the 730N will go back to being the standard equipment.

Can someone please provide a side-by-side of features between the RER 730N vs the 430?

Just get the 430N if it's the Garmin interface that you prefer. I'm sure that there will be future updated models with the Garmin sometime down the road and it would be easy to switch radios.

The RER/RHR will still be the premium radios, with premium features such as Dead Reckoning. On the RHR the Voice Command feature will have improvements, there will be improvements to the POI search and iPod control as well as audio quality (digital). There are also upgrades for the POI icons. More information as I get it...

I believe the audio capabilities between the two units are identical. The only difference might be the ability to display split screen nav/stereo controls on the 730N. Otherwise, as I read the specs on them, there's no difference. Same speakers, same amp, etc.

Are you speaking of audio control functions? Otherwise, as stated by Techno, the audio specs would be the same.

Milous suggests the RHR has better audio quality. Please read his post above.

I'm not sure how it would have that- if it isn't going to support HD sources (DVD-Audio), have better speakers or amplifiers, from whence will the improvement come?

Audio quality from a system has to do with the source material, the speakers, the acoustic environment, and the amplification. While there's more variables than those, those four are the main contributors, and amplification is a DISTANT fourth. A bad source won't sound good on the best speakers. A great source and awesome amps are worthless if the speakers are crap. Awesome speakers mean little if the environment is too noisy to hear detail. Get those four in line, and in an automobile, you're just not going to hear any differences in D/A converters. Not going to happen. The engineers designing it might call it an improvement, but I'd bet it's theoretical, not actually noticeable.

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

It could be the internals of the headunit's preamp and DACs that would definitely lead to a better audio quality. There are also some converters for MP3s that digest the compressed format and then spit out a signal similar to what was the full frequency form prior to the compression. Some of those things could be installed within a new headunit.
