Some people imply the 730 RHR is Garmin. My dealer says its Navteq. Both of them sounded like speculation.

My understanding:
  • 430 (REN)
    • No nav
    • Replaced by RBZ
  • 430 (RBZ)
    • No nav
    • Default on Laredo
  • 430N (RHB)
    • Garming Nav interface
    • Default on Overland now
  • 730N (RER)
    • Navteq Nav interface
    • Was default, but now an upgrade option on Overland
  • 730N (RHR)
    • ???? Nav interface
    • Will replace 730N (RER)
By the way, do I have the naming right? I know Garmin is Garmin. But, what is the right name for the other nav interface? Is Navteq, MyGIG, Harmon, and/or "the older one" all synonymous?
730N RER Harmon
430N RHB Garmin
730N RHR Garmin but not available until Jan 15th 2011

Anyone know if the 730N RHR Garmin will have the dead reckoning and voice control like the current 730N RER?

It is believed that it will have them.

Navteq makes maps, not the GPS interface. Navteq is owned by Nokia, and their major competitor is/has been TeleAtlas, now owned by TomTom (a competitor to Garmin). GPS makers buy maps from one of the mapping companies (most GPS makers use Navteq in the US, since they seem to be more accurate, but TeleAtlas has improved), and they put it together with their own interface and routing software. Garmin is pretty well recognized as the best in this arena (I prefer TomTom's interface due to the customizability, but Garmin is superior for routing).

The 730N's interface is currently made by Harmon, who only makes units for OEM applications; they just aren't a player in the personal nav device market. Garmin's involvement with Chrysler in the 430N and soon to be 730N RHR is a first, and a very welcome one at that (in my opinion)- the nav systems are priced far more reasonably than in many other vehicles and there's less concern about the quality of the directions or cost of map updates.

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

What I want to know is which one to get if you order a Jeep now?

It seems like nobody has a definitive answer. I would love to see a review/comparison of the two. I don't want to choose the more expensive one only to find out it sucks compared to the garmin.

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

It's something I need to learn more so more reviews would be nice yet there are few good posts describing its features and such.

The picture I posted right above - I don't know as if it changes due to availability by the way.

Since I plan to order a Overland (more likely), then it comes with the 730N unless the new replacement (RHR) comes out available in time when ordering.

More details at: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/wk2_navigation.htm
(someone posted it already)

That changed: the Overland is standard with the 430N now!

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

OK, I've been digging around and seem to find a lot of conflicting information.

I picked up a Limited yesterday. The window sticker says Media Center 430N CD/DVD/MP3/HDD/NAV
and then a few lines further down it says:
Garmin Navigation System

However, after looking in the manual I don't see any NAV choice on my radio. From this post it looks like the 430 is standard on the Limited, but am confused if the sticker says it should have it.

Am I just missing something to get to the NAV system?

If it's listed on the window sticker can I push my dealer to put an 'N' in it if it does not have it?

Thanks, all

Maps and whatnot may be shared between units, but the routing algorithms are what REALLY matters, and that's why I'd rather have the 430N Garmin unit, even though the 730N does have some nifty capabilities.

Heh, we ordered the same day. The Limited does not come with nav as a standard feature, so you'd have been picking out which one you wanted- the 430N or the 730N. Since you specified the 730N (and presumably paid for it), I strongly expect that is what you will receive. All the confusion is centered around which unit is standard on the Overland, not what is optional on the other trim levels.

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

If they installed the wrong radio, and you've obviously paid for the option, then yes, by all means have them install the proper Nav unit.
