if you cant get to the nav from the menu button then you dont have it. i'd call the dealer, if its on the sticker it should be in the truck. i would think....

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

Thanks much for the help!

  • To my original question:
    • What is the nav interface on the 730N RHR media center? Is it Garmin or Navteq?
  • I understand:
    • It will be Garmin (according to Steve52), and that the correct phrasing for nav interface comparisons is "Garmin vs. Harmon" (according to Technosavant).
  • But, for the record:
    • Existing documents are ambiguous and/or imply the 730N RHR will be Harmon (see Ughs below). I can't find anything in writing that says the 730N RHR will be Garmin.
  • For new readers:
    • The 730N RHR will apparently replace the 730N RER in Jan 2011.
    • The 430N RHB has a Garmin nav interface, while the 730N RER has a Harmon (aka Navteq) nav interface.
    • The 430N RHB is now standard on the Overland. This was a recent change.
First, I love Garmin GPSs and Jeep. Bought three each; going to be four each soon. I'm going with the 430N RHB or the 730N RHR (if possible and if Garmin), but not the 730N RER. IMHO, Garmin is the only way to go.

Some things I noticed:
  • The ever popular wk2_navigation page is ambiguous as to whether the 730N RHR will be Garmin. Ugh #1.
    • It also does not yet describe what it will have (e.g. dead reckoning, iPod control, etc).
  • Regarding feature comparisons, here's what I can figure out:
    • Features the 430N RHB has over the 730N RER:
      • USB copy/read (i.e. play from USB stick, versus copy only as in the 730N RER), streaming bluetooth (i.e. for music, versus basic bluetooth in the 730N RER), hands free text, voice control over music (but not nav).
    • Features the 730N RER has over the 430N RHB:
      • Dead-reckoning, iPod Control (versus just Connectivity like the 430N RHB), voice control over nav (but not music), split screen.
    • Both have stuff like:
      • Bluetooth, various CD/DVD/MP3/WMA formats support, copy to HD, etc, etc.
    • The 730N RHR will have:
      • All of the 430N RHB and 730N RER features, plus the Garmin Nav interface (purportedly).
  • Here's an interesting image I found regarding differences.
    • Notice, it says "Garmin vs. Navteq", instead of "Garmin vs. Harmon". I think the "Navteq" naming is misleading, because I believe Technosavant, in that Navteq is the map data, while Harmon is the nav interface. In other words, I think the safest way to state this is "Garmin vs. Harmon (aka Navteq)".
    • This document is ambiguous as to whether the 730N RHR will be Harmon (aka Navteq) or Garmin. Ugh #2.
  • Here's another 430N RHB versus 730N RER comparison:
    • Notice it says the RHR is a replacement for the RER, and the comment is on the right? This lightly implies the RHR is Harmon (aka Navteq), not Garmin. Ugh #4.
    • Notice it also says Uconnect is an optional upgrade to the 430N RHB. I didn't know that. I wonder if the 430N RHB that comes standard on the Overland comes with Uconnect by default (i.e. no seperate order line item). Man, this could blindside somebody.
  • Other random stuff:
    • The lower-right corner of the your media center will have its designation, RBZ/RHB/RER/RHR/etc.
    • I noticed the 2011 Wrangler has the option for 430N RHB or the 730N RHR, but not the 730N RER.
      • Yet, it specifically leaves off the Garmin name on the RHR line item, strongly implying it's Harmon. Ugh #5.
      • If both the RHB and RHR are actually Garmin, this implies Garmin is the future, and Harmon is on the way out.
    • I noticed the 2011 Grand Cherokee lists the 430N RHB or the 730N RER/RHR
      • Yet, it specifically leaves off the Garmin name on the RHR line, lightly implying it's Harmon. Ugh #6.
    • The Chrysler site has user manuals (correction: here) for the 430RBZ/730RER/etc, but no 730N(RHR).
      • Notice the 430 RBZ link has 430 RHB documentation buried inside it.
      • Notice the 430N RHB Garmin interface supports loading of custom Points Of Interest (via POI loader & burned CDROM)
        • This is the similar to hand-held Garmin GPSs. For example, use Google maps to create points say for house hunting, or poi-factory for a variety of things, or caches for full-on PNGs. Very cool.
        • Now, if it could also support the loading of custom overlay maps (e.g. satellite, topo, etc, via custom img files), that would give you satellite/topo maps in the media center of a trail rated vehicle. How cool would that be???!!!
So, 730N RHR has the Garmin nav interface and will begin ship in Jan 2011. Right?

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

Thanks for the link.

You're right, from the pics it is the N, but the model number on the bottom right is RBZ. Strange....

Guess I'm calling the dealer tomorrow.

LOVE the vehicle so far, though!!!!!

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

Humble,

As for as Uconnect is concerned, I believe it is standard on Overland no matter which media center you get, the 730N or the 430N. I can't say for the Limited or Overland options. At least from everything I have read it says it is standard on the Overland. If you go to jeep.com and build a 2011 Overland and do not go for the 730N it still shows you get Uconnect.

Steve

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

So which Nav unite would be best for controlling ipods. If both have Uconnect (on an Overland), I assume they would both control them the same? I ask this because it is really all I care about. I just want to be able to scroll through artists and songs on the ipod. Can both units do this?

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

If you have the 730n...you can make calls using the uconnect...but not control the ipod....for that youll need the ipod interface cable and then just scroll through the music using your ipod.

My Limited has the 730N RER radio. It has a jack located in the lower storage compartment for the IPOD. The cable comes with the GC. Just plug one end into the jack, the other in the IPOD and you control it via the radio. No accessories needed.

Re: 2011 WK: Garmin navigation

Have you used the iPod interface with it? I was just wondering if its functionality is good. It seems the 430 unit is promoted as the unit with iPod controls, but I think other than that I would like the 730 (mainly because of dead reckoning).

I have the 730n and it works great with the ipod. You CANNOT scroll through on the ipod itself once connected at least on either one of my ipods I have used (a 3rd gen nano and an 80 gig video). But on the touchscreen of the radio you can scroll through and select songs without a problem.
