Perhaps they are betting that incentives won't change much and that regardless of zag pricing, it's a decent deal for them. They wouldn't accept affiliate programs in the first place if they weren't able to make any money at those prices (through holdback, incentives, etc.). Another reasonable dealer said that they could order the vehicle with the options I want now and would honor the zag.com price for 2012 when that pricing is released (and that if I wasn't happy with it they would refund my deposit). So, while you are correct that it is difficult to negotiate final numbers at this time (since final pricing isn't released yet), when talking price relative to invoice it seems each dealer decides what kinds of business decisions it will make.

While over the summertime moving current inventory is probably the top priority, if a customer will not take a 2011 from the lot, allowing them to pre-order a 2012 appears to be a low-risk venture for a car dealer. Normally they have to order some amount of inventory based on projections and wait for it to clear, but with a car a motivated buyer is specifically ordering, there is no wait time where they have to float an extra vehicle on the lot. Even if they only make a little money, it comes at little effort or opportunity cost (except perhaps a lost opportunity to clear out inventory from the prior model year). And they still have a chance to make more off you from the trade-in or financing (luckily, neither of which is an consideration for me). On the small chance that you cancel your order, they've only added one more vehicle to their normal inventory order which will sell in due time anyhow (likely at a higher price than informed pre-ordering negotiators like those on this forum would take). Seems like a sensible proposition, but if somebody knows the industry, please feel free to correct me and/or shed some light on the inside scoop regarding dealer pricing.
Interesting and tempting approach -- thanks for providing details. I wonder, though, whether details of the options roster will change for 2012? Not that what's offered will change, but rather which are in what option packages, which items are now standard that used to be optional, and so on.

Real world, this may be counting angels on the head of a pin. Order now, get it sooner -- that's mighty tempting!

That shade may not be accurate, awaiting final color chips.

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Yesterday went by Carmax in Norcross, Georgia (consulting in Atlanta and have free use of a condo in Norcross).
The Jeep Patriot also has the Deep Cherry. Will go with the Deep Cherry rather than the Silver, but love both.
The Carmax Manager Rob wanted me to order a 2012 Summit but I insisted on a standard Overland.
Rob said that only the Saddle was available on the Overland. Love all the interiors but wanted the Black.
Has anyone had problems ordering the Black interior on the Overland? What is the order code?
The codes Rob gave me follow. Does anyone have anything different?
WKJS74 GC Overland 4x4
24P Customer Preferred Package 24P
EZH 5.7L V8 MDS VVT Engine
DG1 6-Spd Automatic 65RFE Transmission
PRP Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl Coat
APA Monotone Paint
*GL Leather Trim Seats w/Edge Welting
-XT New Saddle/Black
NHK Engine Block Heater
XS3 New Saddle/Black Interior
ADG Advanced Warning/Adaptive Cruise Ctl
AWY Off-Road Adventure II
They are going to try to get the prices via phone next week from Jeep. They said that their price would probably be the lowest, even less than USAA Buying Service.
Two other dealers (one in GA and one in Detroit) said they could order 2012 now and would honor 1% under invoice.
The 1% under invoice would be about $500. It appears one can do better than that.
Might have to wait for 4 more weeks to order. Will see.

Not counting special discounts like military, does anyone get more than $850 below invoice?
If so, how does one do it?

JeepinDave,

I ordered the deep cherry red overland with black interior. No issues. I think your dealer might have been doing something wrong?

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Nice Deal! Anyone know if we can use one of the lease / competitive $1,000 rebates on a 2012 order? I'm currently leasing a BMW and would love another $1,000 off but I heard it ends July 5th (and I'm not sure it works on an order). I might call my dealer to try tomorrow.
