Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Milous - if the new 2012 "6 Speed" is a reprogrammed 5 speed, could a 2011 tranny be reprogrammed to get the 6th gear? Just a stupid question.

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

could someone please explain this "reprogramming" of a transmission to get an extra gear. unless i'm mistaken, transmissions are mechanical devices with physical gears. so unless the gear already existed in the first place, you can't just add a gear by switching a 0 to a 1, you have to physically add it into there.

I was kinda wondering the same thing....

Also, will a 6spd hemi make my decision more difficult for gas mileage? I am leaning toward the v6 for gas reasons, plus I wont be towing and it will be the main "family" car. BUT if the 2012 hemi has a 6spd tranny, will it make it that much closer to the v6 gas efficiency? the EPA's seem pretty close as is, one would think the extra gear would make the V8 EPA even closer to the V6...

^I think it depends if you drive primarily highway or city. For highway, it should add 1-2 mpg.

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Hey guys - You do know that the tranny behind the Hemi IS a 6 Speed already don't you? It has 2 different 2nd or 3rd gears (I forget which) used depending on whether you are accerating or passing.... Simple program change makes them sequential like a "real" 6 speed....

At the risk of over simplification, the current transmission has three planetary gear sets connected together. The computer can tell each to direct drive or run at its ratio by sending hydraulic pressure to a clutch pack.

If the gear sets are all commanded to direct, then you have a direct drive through (otherwise know as 3rd). The computer can command any combination of gear sets, and with three gear sets there are 8 possible ratios. But, in practice, the math doesn't always work out and some of the ratios are not very useful (effective ratios are so close to each other) so they don't bother programing the computer to use them. So there may only be 4 or 5 useful ratios available.

The next generation transmissions may have more gear sets or the planetary gearing set up differently to provide more ratios that are useful and the computer can be programmed to select from.

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

All of us getting set to order a 2012 are real anxious for solid information on changes, including colors. Still, it's worth keeping in mind that complete official information will be available in under four weeks, and likely leaked some time before that.

It's a-comin'!

Yeah, but we probably won't know invoice pricing yet.

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

$64k question is what risks there might be when ordering weeks before production begins? Obviously, can't see the new colors firsthand except perhaps on other Chrysler products. But you have to wonder whether it will be less likely for there to be alterations or problems or a price advantage if ordering is postponed until August...
