2012 JGC & Towing

I have a 2012 JGC with the 6 cylinder engine and the full time 4wd drivetrain. It did not come with a hitch, but did come with the trailer sway damping feature. I have added a factory hitch.

The manual says 3500# max unless the factory towing setup was installed, then 5000#. My question is what is in the factory tow package that I don't have. I appreciate your input.

Re: 2012 JGC & Towing

Factory tow not only includes the hitch receiver and electrical hookups, it also includes certain improvements to suspension (load leveling shocks), cooling, brakes and so forth. The actual composition of the package varies with the trim level and engine. A 3500 lbs towing limit is typical for a v6 vehicle without such improvements and not just with Jeep. Part of that is saying to you that you shouldn't have more than 350 lbs tongue weight. (US standards are typically 10%)

Re: 2012 JGC & Towing

With the 4x4 the factory towing package included a number of things such as load levelling shocks. The 4x2 just got the receiver and wiring harness (but not a brake controller). It does include wiring for both 4 pin and 7 pin (Bargman) connectors. The 7 pin includes wiring for electric brakes.

The factory receiver is a 2" class IV and mounted into and inline with the "frame rails" (monocoque channels). It is very strong. Many aftermarket hitches are underslung to avoid having to modify the facia (factory installs through the facia) and some have class II (1 1/4") receivers.

I often pull a 3500 lb (plus load) travel trailer and the V6 is fine for Interstate speeds (I usually cruise at 65) and gets 17-18 mpg in Florida. One thing I noticed in the OM is that you are not supposed to exceed 40 ft2 frontal area. Since the WK2 is 31 ft2 that is not easy but the TT is less.
