Talking 2012 JGC gets 29 MPG??

So I'm deciding whether or not to buy a new 2012 Grand Cherokee with the 3.6L V6. I know it's rated for 16/23 MPG. However, my wife and I test drove one today with the kids and we got 21.4 mixed city/hwy and 28.7 at 65 MPH on flat highway. We put about 60 miles on the jeep during the test drive so these aren't inaccurate numbers based upon coasting down a hill over a mile or two.

Anybody else seeing these types of MPG numbers? I've seen most everybody else saying on here that they're getting low 20s hwy on their 3.6 JGC. I don't put my foot in the pedal generally and wasn't today either, but on the other hand I wasn't trying to hypermile or anything like that either.

Most likely you had a tailwind or is was just slightly downhill. Did you drive both directions and average them?

Re: 2012 JGC gets 29 MPG??

Short form, yes it is very possible. Did you reset the MPG once on the highway ? Was it a 2WD Laredo ?

Long form: (1) Have recorded 147 miles at speeds ranging from 25 to 70 with a 24.6 mph average. This included puttering around an aiport & medium heavy traffic on my return. Used cruise a lot but not babying. (2) On 124 readings (am starting to build a baseline log) in four minutes at steady 55 then 60 (two different highways with a merge) & cruise on averaged 39 mpg. Keep in mind this is already warmed up and at speed before started so unrealistic. First was just a day out & not yet broken in.

So very possible.

I typically get 21-22 in mixed driving. When I drive from Sacramento to LA (mostly flat), I average 24.5. This week on a return trip from Nevada, I averaged. 29.3 over 177 miles. Down hill slopes are great.

Re: 2012 JGC gets 29 MPG??

I bought my V6 Overland new last month and keep a log of my fill ups. My driving consists of far suburban driving usually with no traffic, but stop signs and stop lights here and there. The Jeep is a 2012 Overland V6 with adaptive cruise and the 20" wheels.

My first fill up was at 533 miles. I had 382.9 miles to that tank and 22.3 gallons went in it. So the very first tank I averaged 17.1mpg.
Second tank I filled up at 947 miles and went 413.2 miles and put 22.1 gallons in. So that tank got me 18.6mpg.
The most recent tank I filled up at 1,343 miles, got 396.2 to the tank and filled with 20.8 gallons. So that tank was at 19.0mpg.
So to sum it up:
17.1mpg
18.6mpg
19.0mpg

So as she gets more miles it's slowly but surely getting better. Also, please keep in mind these figures are basically with little to no actual highway use.
So far with 1400 miles on the odo I am thrilled with my Overland V6. I am very happy with my decision to go with the V6. And surprisingly when I get on it she actually goes pretty good!

James

Re: 2012 JGC gets 29 MPG??

Flat lands result in higher mileage. Rolling hills and more equate to 18-20 mpg with the 5.7L after a year and a half of driving.

We drove both directions on the same stretch of highway. So if there was a tail wind in one direction it would have been a head wind in the other. Cruise set at 65.

I reset the MPG pulling out of the dealer parking lot to drive in the city, drove around for 15ish miles. Then reset it once more before getting on the highway entrance ramp.

How fast do you typically drive on the highway?

Re: 2012 JGC gets 29 MPG??

Think we could put together a great commercial, back in the 70s Phoenix->LA was popular because it is downhill. We could go one better and make it Tucson->LA on one tank easy (even more downhill). Bet under the right conditions & 51 psi in the Forteras we could hit 30.

Picture a happy smiling family of five (and the dog) heading into Wally World with a three word caption: "30 mpg. Jeep"

Re: 2012 JGC gets 29 MPG??

I'm a fairly economical driver and I average about 20.5 combined highway and city. Mine's 4WD. On rural two lanes, rolling country I can get 25. 5 over on the freeway 22 or 23.
