2012 or 2013 Overland

After crunching some numbers the Summit might not be for me. I noticed some 2012 and 2013 Overland models in my area.

Any known issues or years or models a noob should avoid?

How about replacing the head unit? Any concerns. By looking at it, looks like it should be no big deal to replace. However I know some cars like Cadillac tie so much stuff to the head unit it's almost impossible to replace

Re: 2012 or 2013 Overland

I had a 2011 Overland and now have a 2014 Overland. Would definitely reco going for a used '14 if you can swing it, as the tech upgrades alone make it worth it. It was a night and day difference between the two for me. Also - I had more issues with my '11 then I have with the with the current one - random right!

Re: 2012 or 2013 Overland

I bought a 2011 Overland new in 2011 for my wife and recently bought a used 2013 Overland for myself. The two vehicles are essentially identical and the 2011 has been trouble free. So in your case, all other things being equal (which is usually not the case when buying a used car) I would go with the 2013 simply because (usually) the more cars built of a given design, the better the car is from both assembly quality and parts quality. There are a couple of recalls on the 013' ; one is to fix some wiring in the sun visor and the other is to add a shield to better protect the brake booster (or replace the booster if it is corroded). I think both also apply to the 2012.
However some cars, no matter what the year, are lemons. The real issue is to try to determine why someone is selling a 2012 or 2013 vehicle and try to avoid buying one that someone is getting rid of because it has needed repair after repair.

Re: 2012 or 2013 Overland

I just bought a 2013 JGC Overland a few days ago. Has 48,000 miles on it and the 5.7L engine. Loving it but the Uconnect/Nav feature is truly frustrating to use.

I would most likely rip out the head unit. There is one made by Insane Audio that is basically an Android tablet. It's made for the Wrangler but I am pretty sure the radio in the Wrangler is the same one in the 2011 to 2013 JGC.

It's pricey, but any of those high end aftermarket head units are. Also it is basically plug and play meaning you don't have to pay for an install

Re: 2012 or 2013 Overland

It's easier to replace the systems (430 & 730) on the MY11-MY13 than for MY14+...changes made to the electrical system and a lot of the vehicle function moved into the "head" for MY14+. There are adapter connectors available for somewhat plug and play available, too. A few threads in the Audio/Visual/Navigation - Jeep Garage - Jeep Forum forum area above apply.

If I got a 2014+ I would keep the 8.4 system. I think it is pretty good for a car manufacturer system.

Re: 2012 or 2013 Overland

Honestly, the 730N in my MY12 Summit isn't horrible at all. I occasionally have had the ever-popular freeze, but otherwise, it sounds fine for my purposes. I've kept it up do date with firmware thanks to SOX and have never had a desire to replace it with something else at my expense.

Please tell me who or what SOX is.

Yeah, I definitely agree on the frustrating NAV. I am waiting for the following to come out: #CES 2015: Parrot RNB6, the most connected in-vehicle infotainment system | Parrot news

Anyone have the overhead rear seat entertainment system? Does it require the head unit or will it still work with an aftermarket?
