2013 Altitude or wait for 2014 models?

Hi, first post here. Been in the market for a SUV for a few months. Narrowed it down to a Jeep GC. What a beautiful SUV. I can't believe it eluded me for so long. I originally only looked at the 4runner and FJ Cruiser (long time Toyota guy). After seeing the commercial for the Altitude I fell in love.

I guess I have a two part question. First question is, did I do well? I negotiated a white 2013 altitude down to $37Kish (MSRP is $43K). It comes with all the bells and whistles...4x4, v8, sunroof, powered lift gate, 430N, tow package. From what I gleaned in reading "what I paid" threads on various forums it's not a bad deal.

I guess the only thing holding me back is the short production period for 2013. If the 2014 models will be available in January (or production starts), wondering if I would be remiss to not wait. My wife tells me to wait, but my concern is that the altitude is in such short supply here in so cal that supply could dry up. Right now there are only 3 V8 within a 300 mile radius.

I think the long list of new changes in the 2014 warrant the short wait. To each their own though. Do you need new transportation immediately? If so, buy now, if not, I would wait.

Re: 2013 Altitude or wait for 2014 models?

It's gonna depend also on how much you're willing to spend. If you think the 2014 will be the same price as the '13 you're insane. And don't think that the dealers aren't going to gouge for the first 2014s they get.

I do expect the price to go up by a few thousand bucks for all the "upgrades".

That's not going to happen. It's only a refresh. I expect about a $550 increase in price at initial launch for the 2014s compared to the 2013s.

Sounds like a good deal. I don't think there's a wrong way to go here but if you go for the 13 make sure you won't regret it. Yes you will probably spend a couple grand more for a 14 but when your spending this kind of money it's best to get exactly what you want imo.

That being said, the Altitudes are bad azz!

True, but rebates are non-existent on 2013s right now (I think).

Re: 2013 Altitude or wait for 2014 models?

Your wife is smart.... I'd wait this out. Nothing like having a year old vehicle right after the new year starts. Many years down the road, KBB values will see it as a 2013 with high mileage.

I don't know how these manufacturers are getting away with starting a new model year 9 to 10 months before it happens.

You're crazy. There's a brand new (and much larger and expensive) touchscreen, a new and more expensive transmission, a host of other upgrades that will also add cost, and just your normal price hikes every year.

There's NO way they're not going to pass the additional cost on to the consumer.

Re: 2013 Altitude or wait for 2014 models?

Well, I am in the same predicament as you but probably in a worse situation. I have an 04 Touareg V8 and its time to get a new car. The GC is on my list because the new Tregs dont even offer 4low. Plus, the GC is less expensive (better value) for what you get. I had to choose between buying a 2012/13 model or a 2014. If I waited for the 2014, I was going to have to soak about 1500 in my Treg for the big 80k tune up. Well I decided to spend money on my Treg because of what is being offered in 2014. The most appealing to me is the fact it will come with the CRD option which may get upwards of 30mpg on the highway with an 8sp tranny. I would kick myself if I settled for a V6 that really couldnt tow, or a v8 that has crappy gas mileage because I was too impatient to wait. Plus I like the look of the 8 inch display that the 14 will come with. Dont get me wrong I would be very happy until they finally come out with the 14 model. Then I would say to my self everytime I pulled into the gas station. Damn I wish I waited. Hope this helps.

Re: 2013 Altitude or wait for 2014 models?

I don't think there will be a huge hike in MSRP for the '14s. The rebates will be nil at first. However, you may get less (standard features) for your money on the '14s. That's how they can hide costs.

Re: 2013 Altitude or wait for 2014 models?

Thanks for the input! I don't need a car immediately so it's probably wise to wait for the '14 models. After thinking about it more, the way I look at, I'd probably still be able to get a '13 altitude come Dec/Jan since the '13 models are only now hitting dealer lots. Plus the allure of the '14 is pretty high...8 spd transmission, diesel engine, upgraded electronics. Would be nice to have options.

I've been driving my '00 4runner for about 10 years now and it's done me extremely well. Very few issues over the years (knock on wood). I guess I just need to resist the impulse to buy now...but more painfully, admit to my wife she was right
