Re: 2013 BMW X5 vs 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ive never had my Jeeps in for service for multiple days...but we had our durango in for the head service. They provided a rental each time if it was overnight. This was not the dealer,.....but chrysler. So if you take your Jeep for 2-3 days and they dont offer a rental.....then ask. Its pretty simple.

I've asked, they've said no. Its been situations where the couple of days have not been planned, they've taken things apart, had to order items, etc. I've had some pretty weird issues.

Even just for one day when we can drop it off the night before and pick it up the same day, only having one car is a pain because I drive during the day for work and my days kind of just unfold, and my wife has to wind up sitting around at work waiting for me.

Again...its no different at any other mainstream brand's dealer...its just different than at a luxury car dealer.

Re: 2013 BMW X5 vs 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I'd take my Jeep over an X5 any day, but as others have posted there are some big differences.

Jeep service for me in South Florida has been horrible. Have tried multiple dealers and they're all bad. My biz partner has a BMW and gets the royal treatment and actually looks forward to going.

The paint job on my Jeep and every other american car in my household is sub par - especially compared to any of the german cars i've seen including VW, which I wouldn't describe as a luxury brand. It has a little bit of orange peel in it, so did my escalade and tahoe i had prior. i don't know why they can't improve that.

another big difference is where panels on the car meet. size of the gaps on the bmw seem much smaller and not all the panels on my jeep line up perfectly. again, nothing horrible, but there is a difference.

my friend's father just got an E350 decked out. Was amazing to me how much of the design queues the Jeep shares with this car interior wise. Similar buttons, shapes, etc. Definitely see the Daimler in the Jeep.

I think the new 2014 is gorgeous and takes things to a higher level. Jeep is on a roll...

Re: 2013 BMW X5 vs 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have to say, since I started this thread everybody's opinions and experiences are much appreciated! I will say that I love my 2014 JGC limited. A huge upgrade from the 2013 in my opinion, hence the reason I traded it six weeks later. Although, I am sorry I didn't just go for the Overland, but whatever. I love the Grand Cherokee, specifically, but now waiting to see what the BMW 4 series or even the new X5 generation will bring. I was very surprised at the service department for Jeep. Seriously, a different level of service and experience than what BMW offers hands down and I just need to overlook it for now. However, both the X5 and JGC bring their own set of capabilities and I can certainly appreciate both of them. It's like buying a house. In my experience, there is no such thing as buying a "perfect house". Same with cars and same with their service departments.<O</O

Re: 2013 BMW X5 vs 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

A few points I don't know if anybody has made:

1- I would personally only consider leasing a BMW. The residuals are very strong, much stronger then a Jeep, and the MF is usually very low, and if you put down maximum MSD's, and buy near invoice or via ED, it prices out very competitively to a lease on a loaded overland or Summit.

2- With a lease both vehicles are under warranty so the cost of maintenance is not relevant. Anybody who wants to own a BMW long term is nuts, these vehicle are just not engineering to be affordable anymore beyond 100K miles. We aren't talking about e36 chassis anymore. The advantage here is the X5 also has free maintenance during the leasing period while the Jeep is maintained out of pocket

3- People have talked about the different level of service between the brands but what I've found is that Jeep dealers are hit and miss. Some do have alot of the luxuries and frills of a BMW dealer, others don't ... but what you don't get with Jeep ... is free loaner cars while your vehicle is in for service or warranty work. This is more then just a luxury when it get's time back into my day. My experience with Jeep is they will only consider a loaner if the service is over $500 and usually it's the cheapest car/rental they can get. No Jeep dealer I've ever used has offered a free loaner with minor service like BMW does.

4- As far as performance is concerned, the X5 is the clear on road winner IMO except when it comes to towing and at the expense of MPG. The X5 is hard to even find w/ a tow hitch and has towed poorly when I've tried to use it. The towing capacity and performance of the Jeep when towing is superior. Off road uses comparisons have been beat to death.

Personally, if I was considering spending $550-$650/mo on a Overland/Summit I would have to serious consider a X5 in that same ballpark pricing. I think where the Jeep really shines is in lesser trim where a $350-$450/mo gets you a very very capable vehicle with whichBMW cannot even compete

Regarding European delivery, I don't think the x5 qualifies because they are built here. So if you are factoring that in as part of the equation to lean towards an x5, I don't think you'll be able to. I gotta say I love bmw's but I think the grand cherokee looks so much better than the x5. The x5 was my 2nd choice I just couldn't justify the price difference.

Re: 2013 BMW X5 vs 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I own a 2012 Summit and wouldn't trade it for a BMW or any other SUV. I love it.

As for service, I never had a BMW so I can't comment, but I did have a Mercedes and I found the service and service people to be the same as the Jeep dealer. They made mistakes, they were just as friendly as the Jeep people, and they didn't give me a rental. The only perk they gave at the service center was coffee and water. They used to give cookies but they got rid of it.

Same here. I have an X5 and it is a great car when under warranty, but starts getting very expensive thereafter. The X5 is going to be a new body style for 2014 so the 2013 didn't appeal to me along with the unjustifiable price differential.
