Re: 2013 Explorer SPORT vs. 2014 Summit with Hemi

I also looked a the Explorer sport and was very impressed. The EcoBoost engine rocks and it is a very sharp vehicle but in the end the GC was just a better overall vehicle that provided a better value. If I needed a third row seat I would have went with the Explorer though.

Agreed.

Bang for buck, the Explorer is a nice rig.

We agonized over that 3rd row (we have 2 kids, and probably have one more to go). But, that rear door issue just kills me (and the belly scraping).

I can get over the fuel issue (just run regular in it and deal with a bit less power).

I looked at a Durango just to see, and... yeah... no. Maybe with the refresh in Sept, but right now, not a chance. The Grand spoiled me too much to downgrade to the current options and features in the Durango.

Re: 2013 Explorer SPORT vs. 2014 Summit with Hemi

I had a '12 Explorer as a rental on a trip for a week last fall. It was the Limited but I found the drivers seat to be totally uncomfortable after 450 miles. In a similar trip in 2011 that was about 650 miles, with a rental GC Laredo, I felt just as comfortable as I do in my '05 Ram, that is after the trip I did not feel beat up from the drive. I am tall and thin so it's not like I'm trying to stuff myself into a seat and say it's horrible.
If you look at the specs on the Explorer, the wheelbase is actually shorter than the GC so they added all the length with sheet metal rather than extending the wheelbase of the Edge. I think the Explorer has a 1 inch longer wb than the edge.
The rear side vision out of the Explorer is horrible, From the outside it looks like a lot of glass in that rear quarter when in reality it is a small porthole type window.
If you really want the extra space and 3rd seat, then consider the Durango, especially the '14. That thing looks a lot better with just the tweaks that were made, especially to the rear.
The Explorer, Edge, and the Taurus, all use the same platform.
The Durango and GC , to me , are much nicer all around and better vehicles.

God I hate Fords...

You should know that a lot of buyers of 2014 Grand Cherokee, like me, have had zero problem. We just dont post it, too busy enjoying our new Jeep!

Re: 2013 Explorer SPORT vs. 2014 Summit with Hemi

So I just went through all of this comparison shopping myself and drove just about everything from Q7 and X5 to Explorer Sport etc. Anyway, I guess I don't get everyones negative attitude towards any other persons reasons and vehicle choice. If you go to any forum for any of the competitor vehicles, its the same, people LOVE them and lots of people have issues. People who just buy vehicles and aren't car people think we are nuts for talking about our cars on the internet. And, even if every single member of this forum had serious issues with their JGC (which doesn't seem like the case), it would be such a small percentage of the total WK2 ownership through out the world it would hardly register.

Congrats on your new purchase. Have fun with it and hope it meets your needs and expectations.

Re: 2013 Explorer SPORT vs. 2014 Summit with Hemi

Well, I thought the Q7 and X5 and Range Rover Sport were over rated for the money they wanted. Most of them well into the high 60's once I added things like a steering wheel and tires. THey were all very nice and definately the X5 was my favorite, but it ended up being like 70K with options. They were all more sophisticated feeling, but I also knew the maintenance was insane.

I drove the JX35 and MDX, both felt like I was driving my wifes Honda minivan.. nice, but simple A to B with some good tech in them, but even those were more money than I was willing to spend without smiling when I drove them. The ford explorer sport, well that was my favorite up to that point. I could have gotten the one I drove for about 44K with their true no haggle pricing (48K sticker) and was about to pull the trigger.

Since I was currently driving a wrangler unlimited that was only 7 months old (different story on why I was getting out of that) I figured I would check out the JGC. I did some reading and watched all the positive video reviews, but knew I would never want the diesel after watching a friend go through horrific problems with his, and decided they might be worth looking at, plus the dealership I was going to was where i bought my wrangler so I might have better luck on the JGC.

From the second I got in the Overland with Hemi and tech package, I knew I was sitting in my new vehicle. The tech was awesome, the ride was awesome, and I have a soft spot for hemi's (SRT8 Challenger in 2011). It just felt right and I can't describe why...

So, I have my new JGC Black on Black Overland with basically everything I could get. Got a great deal well below invoice and they gave me 2K less than I paid for my wrangler on trade. I have already had a problem where the eco mode wouldn't come off using the button, but they made me a believer in their service when they boosted the part they needed but didn't have in stock off an inventory JGC off the lot and got me on my way... after renting me a car for the afternoon.

Sorry for the novel.

Thanks for the insightful post. As someone who is awaiting the arrival of the new CRD, may I ask what was so horrific with the previous diesel? Thanks.

Re: 2013 Explorer SPORT vs. 2014 Summit with Hemi

If you go on any forum, all you'll read about is problems. That's why most people come to forums -- to complain. We've had 0 issues on our '11. It hasn't been back to the dealer once -- except for the free oil changes. We bought it new, have owned it 17 months, and have 17k mi on it.

Bottom line, buy what you want. Don't be afraid of issues everyone else may be having. In this case, if you want a 3rd row, get the Explorer. If you want more luxury, and only need 2 rows, buy the WK2. I haven't been in a new Explorer, but have had 4 previous versions. Ours were reliable, but we trade often. My dad has had numerous issues with his previous Explorer, and now '10 Mounty.

The Explorer Sport will be a lot quicker, so if that's a high selling point for you, get it. We have not seen official times for the '14 WK2s yet, but I'm guessing 0-60 will be in high 6s. Sport does it in 5.9. Add a Livernois tune, and it will be quite a sleeper.
