2014 first 100 miles - impressions so far
Quick summary of what I paid and think so far...sorry for length of post but thought folks would be curious. Happy to answer questions as best as I can.
Limited 4x4, 5.7L, ORII, Sunroof, 8.4AN RA4, Max Steel, Lt Beige
-Paid 4% below invoice
-Lifetime max care warranty for $2150 (negotiated down further from $2400, after the fact, based on posts here in the DC buyers thread about a MI dealership offering better prices on the max care than the chyslerwarranties.com/Eau Claire dealership site)
-Negotiated roof rack cross bars (with install) for $250
-Negotiated 5 year interior protection/upholstery replacement for $250
- No shortage of power on v8, despite heft of vehicle.
- Still waiting to cross 400 miles before I try a standstill acceleration, but with RPMs around 2200 pick-up is remarkable.
- Transmission is liquid smooth. This is particularly noticeable in the ECO mode, where the transmission truly does shift at quite low RPMs.
- Regarding ECO mode, the fact that it does cycle through gears so quickly does cause me to wonder if for city driving, ECO mode might be hard on the transmission. I'm continuing to experiment with ECO on, as it might just be a personal preference thing. I am getting more used to the frequency of shifting at lower speeds, and frankly if the tranny wasn't so incredibly smooth, I'd def turn this feature off. For now, I'm still trying to use it.
- Regarding Sport mode, it's night and day compared to ECO mode. Each gear reaches a reasonable (not terribly high) RPM ranging btwn 2200-2800 it seems. I need to pay better attention and report back the precise RPM where shifting occurs while in Sport. It certainly pushes into the powerband and delivers much better acceleration.
- Coasting in Sport mode almost feels like engine braking with a manual transmission, however. I'm still getting used to this feeling. Without gas, the vehicle really decelerates quickly. It's surprising to feel this phenomena in an automatic vehicle. This engine braking sensation is noticeably less in standard D and ECO modes.
- In case you're wondering, yes, Sport mode is a lot of fun in this 8 speed...and I really haven't let loose truly yet
- After spending about 40% of time in ECO, 40% in sport and 20% in standard drive, i'm averaging 14.8 MPG. Keep in mind, that is almost exclusively city driving, rarely exceeding 55mph and lots of stops and starts.
- The brakes are softer than I had anticipated for gradual braking. Plenty of braking power, however, fear not. As I start to tow, it will be interesting to see how they fare.
- I have had two instances where fast deceleration over rough city roads kicked on the TC. No big deal, but the TC does seem sensitive. This is comparable to my wife's toyota TC.
- I've never been a fan of TC in dry conditions. Doubt I turn it off, but it might just persuade me to use the Sport mode more often, unless it is wet/snowy.
- It's my first JGC, so others may already appreciate the quality of the suspension. I live in a speed bump and pot-hole rich area. It just gobbles these everyday road hazards up. But it's still a very responsive suspension, surprisingly. I'm really impressed
- Haven't used QL other than while stationary.
- Michelin Latitude Tours (as most of us had suspected). They're not the on/off roads the build sheet promises (this has been discussed quite a bit in the features thread - see that for more info). These are a nice quite ride, and since i'm in DC where it snows very little, I'll likely keep this set.
- Expect 20 min to get it set to where you want it, if you're fairly technology oriented.
- It appears a beast at first, but it has multiple "paths" to get to settings screens, which is nice. In other words, various settings modes aren't buried only down a single menu path.
- Uconnect access remote start takes a few minutes to send the signal, apparently. It's not instant. Just allow yourself a bit more time than you might've initially thought if you want a warm car when you leave the grocery store. I used the app as I left the store, only to have the car actually start as I got to it. About 2 min lapsed.
- There are some nice user-friendly settings deep within the uconn menu such as tilting the mirrors when reversing (this was a pleasant surprise for someone who parallel parks).
- I got a couple PMs asking me about max steel ext with lt beige interior - i have to say i love it. More importantly, my wife loves it too. I had some apprehension about this combo but I am really loving it.
- There have been some discussions about room in back seat. I'm 6' and I'd say that there is enough room for an adult to be comfortable for a short trip in the back seat. For a long trip, it might be a bit tight if I didn't move my seat forward. If you have big kids, I'd actually go see how well it fits them. It's hard to eyeball this sort of thing, but it's a bit less room than I expected to see. Not an issue for me as my son is less than a year old.
- Walnut trim looks awesome up close and personal.
- Can't say enough about the dash area generally. It's sharp. Pictures don't do it justice.
Last note, but I already have a chip in the windshield! Happened this morning. Inside the D St tunnel in DC, something fell from the tunnel roof and created a dime size star chip. Unreal. I had it "repaired" but it didn't really help other than mitigate further cracking. I'll prob replace the windshield in the near future. I had my last vehicle for 7 years with no damage, and on day #3 this happens! Oh well, all you can do is laugh.
