2014 GC Overland Tires

I recently purchased an almost new 2014 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with Hemi V8. The vehicle is a dealership demo with about 15k. The original Goodyear Forterra Tires are in decent shape...but not great. So as part of the purchase agreement...the dealership has agreed to replace the tires.

The dealership has said that they can either put Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tires or Hankook Dynapro SP-2 tires.

I drive a pretty large number of miles each year...probably about 25k for my job as a construction consultant. I drive alot of highway and city street miles...but I also have to be able to drive on construction job sites of varying difficulty.

After reading reviews of both tires...it seems like the Hankook might be an overall better tire. But I am not sure which one of these would be the best choice considering I need some off-road capability. But I will say that the vast majority of my driving is on pavement...not on job sites.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: 2014 GC Overland Tires

I don't have any experience with these tires but I have found the website tirerack always useful in tire decisions. The survey results had the Goodyear mostly as "would not purchase again":

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Wrangler+SR-A

The Hankook SP2 was not found. You may be referring to the HP2 ?

I would not get either of those! Very poor ratings, overall. I would ask for a credit (of atleast $500) and go get some decent rubber! There are lots of good AT tires available! Good luck!

Re: 2014 GC Overland Tires

I concur, get some money from the dealer and find some decent tires.

Yes....sorry...they are the Hankook Dynapro HP 2....not SP 2.

When I negotiated the deal to purchase..one of my conditions is that that the give me new tires. This is because I brokered a deal for the SUV online via email since the dealership is so far away. They had told me it had just under 5k miles on the online listing...but it actually had 15k when I arrived to drive. And instead of almost no wear....there was some wear issues due to the 10k more miles.

Being reasonable...I wasn't expecting the dealership to put on anything better than what comes on the Jeep originally. So i told them that it had to be Goodyear Fortera or better...since that is what is on it now.

They said that the Goodyear Wrangler SR-A is an upgrade over the original...but in doing online research and reading some of the discussions here...the reviews are mixed as it relates to the two different Goodyear tires.

So I could actually ask that they give me Fortera's. Guess I should have mentioned that in my initial post.

So there are really 3 options I guess....and at this point I am tires of waiting on my Jeep...so I am okay with one of the three options with the knowledge that nome of them are great tires.

Re: 2014 GC Overland Tires

LOL... for as long as the SR-A has been on the market (that was the OEM tire on my 02 GC) they consider that to be an upgrade over the Fortera?

I agree! I still have my '02 Overland (in picture) and those SR-A tires were just 'AWEFUL' in the snow! The Fortera's I took off of my '14 Overland were almost as bad! Shame on Chrysler/Fiat for putting such crappy 'street' tires on a Jeep!

Re: 2014 GC Overland Tires

If the Forteras are already that worn after 15K on the odometer, then that says everything you should need to know about getting a set of those again or something worse.

I agree with others, get some credit towards a better set and spend a little out of pocket to get something better longterm.

Cooper AT3 are universally cheaper than almost every other comparable tire and would be my recommendation or the Goodyear AT Adventure, but those are more expensive.

Re: 2014 GC Overland Tires

Yeah...I know that I am choosing between the lesser of three evils....I totally understand that none of these tires are great.

There are plenty of negative comments about the Wranglers and Fortera tires...but there isn't much out there about the Hankook Dynoapro HP-2's out there.

Since neither Goodyear seems all that great...I was thinking maybe the Hankook would be a slight upgrade...but hard to know.

So that said...I guess I was just trying to see if anyone else had an opinion on which they might go with if there were no other alternatives.

Thanks.

Re: 2014 GC Overland Tires

Greetings and welcome

If you can not get the credit, than the better choice will be the Dynpro HP2 from Hankook. This tire is part of the growing trend of low rolling resistance tires to help improve performance in terms of mpg and traction. The tread pattern and compound is designed for the highway, so it might not handle a construction site that well. So choose your site parking carefully. Hankook does make some pretty descent tires in their line up.

If you are going to regions that are prone to snow & ice, then keep the GY for now. Then in 7 to 8 months look into a better tire. The 2 classifications you should investigate are All-Weather and On/Off Road All Terrian tires. In the main section for the WK2 Suspension/Driveline/..../Tires, their is plenty to search for positive recommendations concerning your choices. Better to be safe than sorry.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 GC Overland Tires

Ok...I have an update....

I called and spoke to the salesman at the dealership and asked him if they may be able to offer a different tire if their cost was the same or less than the Hankook and Wrangler. At first they tried to give me a line of crap that they had already ordered the Wranglers and that they couldn't cancel the order....ummm...ok...Im not an idiot. By the way the salesman is 19...nice kid...but doesnt understand that I have a strong BS meter after 43 years on this earth.

Also...if that was the case...then how could they be offering me Hankook tires that they already have in hand.

Anyway...after I argued with the sales-kid...I got a little heated and just told him that I would get back to him about which one I wanted.

The kid just texted me that his "boss" wants to know what other tire I might want "if" they are able to cancel the Wranglers (funny). Amazing how that changed so quickly.

Anyway...I need to shoot them a text about some possible other options. I need to keep the price less than about 190 retail to be in the same ballpark as the Wranglers (they are 195 retail right now on TireRack). I have not idea what the dealer pays for them...but I imagine anything cheaper retail would probably be cheaper for them.

Any quick insights. I see a Cooper tire recommended above...but I am not sure if they can get Cooper tires....

Then get a price on the Coopers and see if they'll give you a credit so you can go get them on your own.
