The v6 uses hydraulic power steering, it is just ran by a electric motor instead of a pully on the engine.

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

Think I will keep my '12. No issues atol. CDs play from the dash and the upper compartment in the center armrest is perfect for Altoids, flash drives, and SD cards. Do need to use my tablet for DVDs.

Will a powered (12v) USB CD/DVD player work in a '14 ?

How can that be? If that's true, what accounts for?

"That's why it has a better feel than the artificial feel of the EPS on the V6 models."

Could it be for the same reason cars run better after you wash and wax them? The human mind is such a fantastic instrument!

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

Could be... I invite the owners of V6's to look under the hood and find their power steering reservoirs. They are full of power steering fluid, not electricity.

Of course there's fluid in the reservoirs. Its an electrohydraulic system.

Instead of using an engine-driven pulley to provide power to the hydraulic pump, an electric motor does.

Increases efficiency by not having another accessory belt drawing engine power....and will also shut off when no assistance is needed...like during highway driving.

Look further up and see I said the same thing you did not a little less involved a little bit ago.

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

There is another point. Hydraulic systems are designed to work at a specific pressure/flow. Engines (particularly the V6) operate over a broad range of speeds which can turn the pump too slow at idle or too fast near red line.

Really if you could turn all of the accessories at a constant speed (there are CVT designs used mainly by aircraft) all would provide all the power needed with the least expenditure of energy.

Now two do not lend themselves to this, first the alternator for obvious reasons and second the a/c (could benefit from constant speed but takes too much power to turn the compreessor. That said, the Prius has a/c.)

In fact a single pump could provide for both power brakes and power steering, the difference is just that for max life the motor should not run continuously which means you need an accumulator (see GM PowerMaster) and these usually need to be replaced about once a decade (mine spin on and off like an oil filter) and a properly designed pump will last even longer.

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

I just got a call from Chrysler, the curt woman on the phone said they are refusing to replace the vehicle even with all the issues. Now I have to wait for multiple parts, a Uconnect unit (which the vendor said they don't have) and they will have the vehicle for a prolonged period of time. I am so frustrated now at the lack of true customer service after being a devoted Jeep person for 20 years. The car only has 1100 miles on it and I have no idea what to expect in the next year.

What did the dealer say about this? Maybe it's time to escalate the issue up the change in Chrysler?
