Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

[QUOTE=DaOne;837999]Thanks all...still loving it!

The no AC/Heat on remote start issue seems to be a software bug and a fix is in the works by Q3 (according to other posts).

[QUOTE]

There has been indications that more software updates are on the way to deal with some issues in UConnect and the HVAC.

Congrats on the new vehicle

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

I posted this in a thread about the UConnect updates in the Audio/Visual forum but I thought I would reprint it here as an update to my continuing Owner's Review. I would love to write about the good things but I still have less than 300 miles and I find I am just absorbed by the issues the car is presenting. Here is the update:

I have had my Jeep since May 30 and the UConnect problems have been happening since day one. I went on the web site and it confirmed I was eligible for an update (from 13.10 to 13.15) but the download failed twice. (According to a UConnect representative I spoke with, their server could only handle 30 people at a time. Nuts!) On my third attempt, I was informed that I had exceeded the maximum number of downloads and had to visit the dealer. I guess (sarcasm inserted here) that they meant maximum number of download attempts.

Went to the dealer today and they said they did all of the repairs. On the way home, I noticed that all of my sirius station presets remained the same so I thought I would check the software system version. It was still 13.10. On the way home from dinner, the UConnect system went through the reset process again. Good thing I didn't need to use the navigation system.

When I got home, I checked the UConnect website and now it says there are no updates for my vehicle. Maybe, as others have suggested, the 13.15 update has been pulled. Still, the website should confirm back to you what software version you should have in the vehicle and they should provide an explanation for any changes in the information they previously provided.

More troublesome, I have a new issue with the TFT screen in the dash. When I shut off the car, the screen would not go black. It stayed on. I got back in the car, restarted it and then shut it off again. This time, the screen remained on and all of the lights on the Select-terrain dial lit up and stayed lit, even after I exited the car and closed the door. I restarted it again, shut it down, and this time the Select-terrain dial did not light up but the TFT remained lit, then went black, then lit up again. It finally went black but when I locked the car using the button on the door handle, it lit up again. After a few minutes, it went black and stayed off.

So, a trip to the service center at the dealer did not fix the issue I went there to correct and now I have a new issue. I convinced my wife that buying this Jeep was a good idea and now I am not so sure.

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

I can't speak to all of those things however I am sorry to hear you are having issues. If you would like some assistance trying to run the update yourself I would be happy to consult. regardless of whether the update has been removed or not, it is still better than the stock software and is available in the UConnect Update NOW thread.

Now baring that you may have an actual hardware issues. There have been some known problems with the units that people are working through BUT! you have bought an amazing piece of machinery which I believe is MORE THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS. I know the infotainment system is getting you down but I honestly believe that Chrysler has some good people working on this and it will come together.

As noted though, as your radio seems to not shut off (make sure this isn't just the delay), you may have an actual hardware problem and I hope that your dealer helps you out.

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

Thanks for the words of reason. I do still think the GC is an awesome vehicle. I wrote my post last night right after I had the problems and my 10 year-old son had commented to me how the new car has been nothing but trouble. All of that just got me down. I mean, some of the money I spent on the GC could have been put to my kids' college fund if I had a bought a less expensive car with less technology. What's the use of spending extra for things that don't work or for capabilities that I will rarely use (like true off-roading)?

Today, though, I feel like the issues with the electronics/tech can be fixed. Once that is done, I'll be able to appreciate the GC for the vehicle I thought was worth the extra cash. For the things it can do, even if I rarely do them, because without that capability "rarely" would be "never."

On the issue of downloading the update from a non-Chrysler site: Do you know if that would affect the warranty? I am concerned that if the problem turns out to be the head-unit, Chrysler may not cover it because I loaded on a non-approved update.

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

Firstly on the UConnect update (cus that is easy). The file is simply a copy of the original file for a valid VIN and the instructions specifically allow for customer installation. This is no different than updating your iPod or something else like that... as long as you download the instructions and follow them if something goes wrong than you are fine. The process has even been built that you can re-run the update and or retry a failed update. I think most people here ran the posted file becasue the UConnect site SUCKS. It wouldn't be bad it you became familiar with the process as I believe that this Radio has been built to a high enough standard that the features will continue to expand and the "value" of that package will grow over time as features are added. If your vehicle were out of warranty and you had never done this than maybe I would advise caution. Please note though if there is a hardware issue in the radio the update may make that come to the surface but this does not change the course of action or blame (at the risk of repeating myself )

So secondly, the purely IMHO part... I have driven everything from Straight Trucks to Fieros, Jaguar XJ8s to Cadillac Fleetwood Broughm's (78) (some for work, some I owned). When I researched my next vehicle, I did so for about 8 months, driving various things under many brands, all while I owned my 2009 Mercedes ML320 Bluetec. Frankly I could have gone out and got the BMW or another Mercedes or maybe the Cayenne but after the first time I sat in the Summit and spent a great deal of time driving around and playing with it I could see that Jeep had spent some serious time understanding the customer that buys this type of Lux SUV (I use LUX loosely here basically that we have leather and a couple of nice options).

Sure you might have stretched the budget a little to get some extra goodies but if you want to feel better about the pricing, go online today and try and get ventilated seats in a BMW or Mercedes... pretty basic thing right, very handy when it is hot out but just check the pricing. There are plenty of other examples of stuff like this, the Jeep is ABSOLUTELY amazing value for the money.

So here is where the BMW and Merc guys jump in and tell me I shouldn't compare exactly on the same level but I will... take it back a notch go to a Yukon you need to go to a much more expensive vehicle to get the stuff you got (and you wont get close because it is old tech).

As for the offroad stuff, you will use it trust me. It will save you and you wont even know it, even if you never go off road "on purpose" I camp a lot and occationally I get into a tight spot parking my trailer at a state park... in a little sand or mud. My Mercedes would fail miserably at this where I know the Jeep can overcome. Rock in the way slippery conditions, only have traction on two oposing wheels, a Grand Cherokee like yours would do fine, my old Mercedes, Touareg, BMW... I think even the Yukon didn't have as good a clearence but don't quote me on that.

The first time you get off someones driveway into a soft spot you will say to yourself man I am glad this is a Jeep. Give it some time this "tech" stuff will start doing some things for you soon... Besides, you have the coolest interior colour in the industry, take that Cayenne!

So I Think that was mostly related to a review but I Don't "own" one yet so....

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

To Nomorecars....I feel for you....a new expensive vehicle should not have issues. But the good news is that its software (I imagine the HW is good), so it can be easily fixed.

My Summit now has 200 miles on it with the 10.15.4 version of UConnect and like I said, no issues...it just works. I would insist the dealer updates your system...even take the update in on a flash drive and say here - install this. I would guess your problems go away after the update.

I too have owned luxury names like BMW, Audi, and Jag. Guess what? I've had issues with each. Even my 2008 Acura had the drive train replaced and I don't drive anything hard. So, don't get too down on this...a fix is out there, its under warranty, and in the end you'll have a killer SUV that blows away luxury offerings for significantly less.

On a side note, I work in software and glitches in the first month or so of a new release are common...we schedule weekly patches during this period just knowing things will come up. It's the nature of the beast...QA just doesn't catch everything.

Re: 2014 GC OWNER'S Review

Thank you both, Willix and DaOne. I'll give this time to sort itself out.

All my future posts on this thread will just be reviews of the actual drive and the software will only be mentioned if it interferes with the safety or comfort of the vehicle.

Haha... feel free to post concerns about the software and questions in appropriate threads... it is a very fluid conversation these days.

If you haven't found it by now I will save you the trouble.... no but I have many at my disposal to test with, and not just sitting on the lot, I have put about 200 test miles on them but usually very focused on getting what ever it is I have to mess up.

I find it works well because I can test different build dates and see the differences in software and hardware. Was in a beautiful deep cherry red Summit in the last few days to see if the address book sync worked on the old software for my android.

Next question! Lol
