2014 GC OWNER'S Review

Ok ladies and gents, after hanging around here for almost a year, I figured its time to post a thread of my own.

*Please do not take the poll unless you're an owner/until you take delivery... Thank you.*

As one of the very hard working JNAP UAW workers many folks here find joy in consistently ragging on, I'm very interested in OWNER reviews of their new GC's. We work hard to build a quality product day after day, and although we're not perfect, I'm curious to know how much of that effort has been translated to you all in your purchase(s). There's a lot of negativity out there, and people seem to fish for anything to discredit us and the products we make, but instead of responding individually to the ignorance, I figure a simple review thread is the best way to settle the matter. If you, and I mean those who actually have bought the truck, feel like its a great vehicle and was well worth your money, I'd love to hear about it. And if you think this car is the biggest POS you've ever wasted money on, and will never buy another vehicle "Imported from Detroit" again, I wanna hear that too!

Basically I'm just looking for honest reviews from owners, so that those who may be RESPECTFULLY skeptical, can see for themselves whether or not we deserve their business, as well as how long we will hold the title for the most awarded SUV - EVER! :) Thx in advance guys and gals!

I think it was Chrysler at the time...it was a 2008 Mercedes GL550. I didn't put very many miles on it. It started falling apart immediately, the dealer experience was terrible and it was the least ergonimically friendly vehicle ever. The rear DVD was located UNDER the back passenger seat?

#140 ·
Which way is it out? Mine is sticking out slightly compared to the rear door. Almost like the striker isn't in far enough. Going to let things wear in a bit then get it adjusted on the first oil change I think. Was just curious if yours was out the same or off up and down.

#142 ·
Ill try to get a picture of it sunday. out of town until then.

Looking from the rear up to the front, the door looks like it sticks out just a little more than it should.

and looking at the doors from the side, it looks like the door is slightly higher than the rear door.

maybe like MKA18 says it will settle in, but now that I notice it, I keep noticing it

Yep, sounds like mine looks. From the back it looks a little like the door isn't shut. This is a pic standing in front looking down the door crease, you can see it sticks out a bit. It will push in as well, so I think the striker just needs adjusted a little. The door also needs shut a little harder than the others. Oil change time will be here before I know it so I'll just have them do it then I think. Just a minor adjustment...

I think its in the initial screen you get when you turn the car on... the one where you hit accept for all the warnings of driving and pressing... mine has heat and cooled seats and steering wheel. It seems to remember this until I tell it not to, so maybe that is what you mean.

All things considered, the truck is great. Engine belly pan does not have the hole, no issues with fit and finish, and no unusual noises (yet).
I was disappointed with support from Jeep phone assistance and the instructions provided in manuals and guides to be lacking. They have no realworld experience with their product and can only read from script or manual.
As others have found, when programming UConnect settings, after placing check marks in boxes for various settings some checkmarks go away after about 3 seconds. I believe that after changing a setting or function the display will update to show only features available when engine is running (I changed setting check boxes with ignition in “OFF” mode). While the check marks go away with IGN in “OFF”, the changed checkmarks show active when “IGN” is placed into “RUN” mode. Looking at the settings in “OFF” shows only what is active in “OFF”, looking at settings in “RUN” mode shows what functions are active in “RUN”.
If settings are changed after selecting memory profile 1 (button on driver door), the changes are changed only for memory profile 1 (door button or key-fob). Settings need to be made independently for memory profile 1 and or 2.
To link door button memory profile 1 or 2 to key-fob, put “IGN” into “Run”, depress “S” button on door memory profile switch, release and depress “1” or “2” and hold for about one second within five seconds, after a couple of seconds, UConnect and EVIC will show that memory profile 1 or 2 is being set, while this is being displayed, depress “LOCK” button on key-fob to link that fob to memory profile (link fob to memory profile must have been selected in settings).

If this is not a bug (still think this is a bug and not indended functionality) this whole thing needs to be simplified and selection needs to be explicit. For example if you cannot pick the option with ignition off just gray it out rather than to allow to select and than magically reset the setting. Very confusing and I'm not convinced if this is intended actually. Why I cannot set everything with engine off? Do I have to be moving to be able some features, retarded?

Also settings for Key fob 1 and 2 should be more clear. Maybe have another column or tab to show one or another. At least on top of the screen it should say in BOLD letters settings for KEY FOB 1 or 2 or BOTH so you know what you are doing.

I have had my Summit for 17 days now. The rear liftgate is off center, the battery h as been dead 3 mornings in a row, the Uconnect hasn't worked since day 3. Took it to dealer this morning for repair. I might as well of worked on it myself! They have no clue about any of the problems. They told me to live with the tailgate. They think they need to replace the battery, and they don't have a clue how to fix uconnect. They also left scratches on my dash and front bumper while poking around. Not sure what to do here. I have to take it back in on wed.

#148 ·
My dealer had a local body shop adjust the liftgate. I heard Chrysler will be getting billed $428.00 for the adjustment. This should have been done at the assembly plant but of coarse they just figure to let the customer deal with it. Seems like they are still resorting to old habits that caused them to go belly up not long ago. Have them get it adjusted by a body shop.

I would also tell them to either remove the scratches in the dash and from the front bumper or replace the parts they ruined.

Just got back from the dealer after having them look at my-misaligned door.
Dealer couldnt do anything and had to send pictures into Chrysler and see what the next step would be.

These are some of the pictures I had taken.

1. shows how the rear door is sticking out when fully closed
2. shows the gap at the top between the front and rear door
3. shows the chrome piece at the rear trunk window. hard to see, but theres a little gap and where it should be flush against the car

Hey drongbar, were you ever able to get the door fixed? I have an appointment for mine for tomorrow. I think I posted the pictures in another thread but I don't remember where now. I also notice on the same door that the ambient lighting doesnt work in the cupholders or door handle. I'm wondering if they maybe grabbed a door from a Limited model accidentally instead of the overland? I don't know. This has been the only problem with the vehicle so far, I'm waiting to get it fixed before I "show off" pics of the beast (or beauty).

#151 ·
Mine's at the body shop now for my door, dealer didn't want to mess with it so they just outsourced it. Probably better anyway, I'm not sure I want them touching it anyway. Mine wasn't nearly as bad as yours though... Mine just stuck out with no vertical misalignment. Should be a pretty painless fix for you once they do get it in.

I picked ours up yesterday. Everything was aligned and Jeep was gorgeous. Then I noticed a major defect on the 2" beveled portion of the front of the hood, just left of the "Jeep" emblem. It looked like a spot weld that they just painted over. The guys at the dealership couldn't believe it left the factory like that. They let me walk the lot, pick out a different hood, and they swapped it right then and there.

Everything else has been great so far, except the disappearing U-don't-Connect check mark thing. On the whole, this is an exquisit, incredible piece of machinery and I look forward to long term ownership!

Hey, I made it to 100 voters! Thanks a lot guys.

Looks like 93% have a favorable view of their Jeep. And to the other 7% - well, I'm sorry we let you down. Hopefully some of the good ppl up the ladder will take all of your concerns into consideration, and will continue to work toward even higher quality in the product and processes. Thanks again everyone...

So, my review of my new 2014 JGC limited would have been much different yesterday morning vs. now.

First got it about a week and a half ago. Limited, upgraded to the 8.4 uconnect with nav. Right off the bat, I loved it. I felt like a kid in a candy shop, I was so giddy.

I noticed the uconnect responded a little slowly at times... no biggie. No actually buttons for the heated seats/steering wheel? No Biggie, plus, I like how when you first start the car, and it is loading up, it has those controls called out on the bottom.

5 days after getting it, I had to return my acura to the dealer. (Lease was up). My wife was driving the Jeep behind me on the way to the dealer. I noticed that every time she put a turn signal on, the rest of the lights on that side of the vehicle would go out. Strange, but glitches happen. Figured I would call the dealer and have them look at it.

Then, two days ago, I noticed the engine was having a real hard time going uphill, even with only a slight incline. One road to my house is about a 1 1/2 mile long, slight incline. MPG's would drop to about 3. I was averaging 14-16 mpg on my 1/2 hour commute... the whole thing did not seem right.

Fast forward to last night, on my way home. I start driving, and after a minute, the whole instrument panel goes dead. No Screen showing speed, or or anything. The actual gauges for temp, rpm's, and feul are are down. I pulled over, shut the car off, and then restarted it. Still no instrument panel. This is where I made my mistake: I decided to drive it immediately to the dealer. I shoulda just left it instead of driving it further.

I get on the highway, and it is backed up, so I am going slow. I guess around 20 mph or so, but I am not sure. Traffic clears up a bit, and I have room, so I hit the gas. The engine whines real loud, I can tell it never shifted gears, then all of a sudden, everything is dead. No sounds from the engine, uconnect is off, AC, everything... the Jeep starts coasting, slowing down, in the middle of the highway. All of a sudden, it roars to life, the whole thing kinda 'bucks' and goes flying forward. At this point, I am almost at the exit for the dealer, about a tenth of a mile away, so I just finish driving it there.

It was too late for any technicians to look at it, so they are supposed to diagnose it today, and let me know. Gave me a loaner for the time being. They all commented about how awful the engine sounded while it was in park though.

I did not vote in the actual poll in this thread... I want to see what happens from here. Real glad my wife had the kids last night and not me though.

I think you have the grounding issue that there is a Chrysler Star case for.. Do you have the LED headlights? If so, the only light that should be going on that side is the blinker light, the led shut off.

#166 ·
Dealer technician called me back.

For the electrical stuff, they still had no idea. I told them about the star case, said he would look into it.

For the mechanical, i.e. shifting, shutting down while driving, etc that I described above: He said all of it was caused by bad welding breaking the catalytic converter. he mentioned something about a part just snapping off. For all of you people who are much more technical than I am, does that seem reasonable? It seems like a lot of issues to come up, because of the exhaust system.

By the way, this forum is great... I appreciate the people here, and sharing/helping.

#167 ·
The exhaust system broke!???

I can see that causing driveability issues, but I just don't see how in the heck that could happen!

Keep us updated on that one.. Definitely a first here.

#169 ·
Obviously, neither is STAR. I have been waiting since yesterday for them to get back in touch with my dealer. they must know about all the problems we are having, and just want us to sweat it out. Hope they can get mine working again. I'm losing faith by the hour.

If that many people are having problems that the dealer can't figure out on their own, then it's take a ticket and wait your turn. If they actually have to duplicate the problem in order to solve it, that could take time.

In the mean time, you are lucky to have JG as a place to vent. we do all feel your pain.

Everything seems to be working fine in my Jeep. I'm still excited about the new car, such an upgrade from the 08 Trailblazer and the 95 GC I was driving. No issues to report at this time. We are taking it to Chicago this weekend for a mini vacation.

#173 ·
STAR never got back to my dealer, go figure it's Friday. So now i will have to wait until next week to continue the saga. Since i've taken delivery, my dealer has had the Jeep almost more than myself. Starting to sound like i ended up with a LEMON. Even if Chrysler has to buy it back, i am still crazy enough to start all over and order a Grand Cherokee Summit. I MISS MY JEEP! Every time i see a black jeep on the road, i am sick. Hope this is over soon.

#176 ·
My thread is over here. Basically, they replaced the ABS module (code indicated it was bad) and the other codes were indicative of a loose ground -- the same issues a bunch of others have experienced. Just a bit down on the first or second page, someone notes where the grounds are. There are a lot of other threads in this WK2 troubleshooting section that mention it too. Hopefully Chrysler will address this soon, as this forum is just a small sampling of the number of GC's they have to be selling. If we've run into it, lots of others must have too.

#178 ·
Definitely. I think it's necessary to have some official record of each issue because the more Chrysler hears about it, the faster they can correct it. ALL 2014 GC's going out should have these ground points checked at the dealer for ones that are in the lots, and then the factory should be double-checking them on the way out if they're not already.

Also, it gives Chrysler a chance to make it good with you for buying a car and then being without it immediately for a week or so because of a defect that should have been caught.

I mean, seriously... driving it off the lot and this happens? Damn.

#179 · (Edited)
Mine was tight. I checked it as soon as the Star # was posted. After I had the problem the dealer disconnected the wires and cleaned the surfaces. That was about a week ago and so far all is good. The codes directed them to that Star #.

#180 ·
Ugghhh! Just got off the phone with the dealer. They are working on it today, will replace the catalytic converter. The do not believe the grounding issue has anything to do with my electrical issues, so basically they are calling it a one time "quirky" event. To be fair, the guy was really nice, and it seems like they really are trying to get it fixed, but I am pretty uncomfortable with the notion that i just have to hope the electrical stuff does not happen again.

At least the issue of the engine shutting down while I am driving on a highway should be resolved.

#181 ·
Uconnect I think has been much better than I expected. One thing that is annoying is switching from radio to sd card. Huge difference in volume. I don't want to blow the speakers out...anyone know if there is a setting on it to reduce the volume on the ad card source?

#190 ·
Think the only thing we can do is have the equalizer at conservative settings . At first i only tried the radio xm / hd and had to almost max the bass on the equalizer to be happy with the sound but once i tried a SD card i decided to go back to the default and a tad lower :D
I guess you could play with the equalizer everytime you switch from radio to SD but would kinda be a pita.
Wondering if anybody did some major changes to the audio in 2014's . The only thing i saw was smbd replacing a dash speaker or smth.

#182 ·
I realized another problem. I'm not sure if it started when all the warning lights came on.

When I go into sand or snow mode the Jeep no longer raises into OR1 height. It raises OK if I press the button so it's not a big deal. Just something that was working originally and decided to quit.

.

#183 ·
So I got my Jeep back a few hours ago. They replaced the left catalytic converter, and also had to do some work on the manifold. He said mechanically it all tested out.

For the electrical issues and the instrument cluster: There were four DTC's present in the ABS module. However, the cause for the DTC's was not present, so he said let's just hope it is something quirky that will only happen once. :(
He said the grounding issue had nothing to do with it.

On the happy side, I drove it home, and the engine sounded and felt even better than when I first picked it up. Breaks felt a little off to me, but I think it is just in my head now, based on what happened. She's going to need to give me a little time before I trust her fully.

#193 ·
And, it's back at the dealership. Car would not shift gears or accelerate over ~10 mph, check engine light came on. Pulled over, shut it down and restarted it, and the light was still on. I normally like being a positive guy, and I am trying to remain that way, but I have to admit this is trying my last nerve.

I am in talks with someone from Chrysler corporate.. waiting for a call back from them.

#184 ·
A couple days into my first jeep and I'm not noticing anything I don't like except for that bracket rattle. I've been , to be a little dramatic, delighted by several things like some of the nav features. And the Bluetooth audio steaming. Cool. I love the space and the way she feels on the road. I love not worrying about having to baby it over some bumps and road imperfections. I'm a happy camper. Now I just need to sell my bmw and all will be good.

Just traded in my 2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo for a 2014 Overland today. Put about 100 miles on it, so far the ride is much smoother (most likely do to advancements as well as the 20" tires). Also the cabin is much quieter than the 2011 ever was. Will be making a thorough inspection of the vehicle tomorrow, but did notice that the instrument panel "glass" had a slight scratch in it, most likely due to the dealer.

I LOVE the 7" display and the 8.4" display, I am a network/systems administrator and love having so much info at the touch of a finger. I have played around with the bluetooth, and the Uconnect app and am very impressed. There are a few things I have found that are annoying, when I use the phone it stays on the phone screen, in the 2011 after I hung up a call the information about the call was gone and it resumed normal operation at the last screen I was using. I also find it a minor annoyance that it does not display my battery and signal level on all screens. These are minor details, the improvements over the 2011 outweigh these, but the point of the thread was for issues people have noticed.

My wife loves the panoramic sun roof, and I love the feel and the ride of having the Overland.

Other than that I am very pleased, 3rd Jeep GC I have had, 2002, 2011, and now 2014, and for the most part very impressed.

I am sure as with the 2011 there will be some bugs to work out but that is to be expected.

Now if you were to ask me about our 2012 Patriot, I would say Jeep dropped the ball on that one.
